75% of Respondents Say There Should Not Be Easy Access To Golf Cart Permits
Written by Wendy Auxillou
Friday, 05 January 2007

Seventy five percent of respondents to an online poll conducted on the website of the Caye Caulker Chronicles (www.cayecaulkerchronicles.com) have made it clear that there should not be easy access to golf cart permits on the island.

The Caye Caulker community has long been protective of its easygoing lifestyle, promoting a leisurely type of island living unencumbered by four wheeled vehicluar traffic. To date, the main mode of transportation on the island is two legs, followed by two wheels (bicycles) and then golf carts. Recently a few permits have been granted for motorized four wheeled vehicles.

The biggest detriment to the island's beauty, said one business owner, is the importation of motorized four wheeled vehicles.

I like golf carts because I am too lazy to walk or ride a bike. But, I did enjoy that there were no motor vehicles to be seen in Caye Caulker except for the cop pickup.
I wish San Pedro had been stricter about the importation of cars and trucks and it would have stayed as it was when I first went there in the late 60's.

Yes, hopefully Caye Caulker can learn and benefit from San Pedro's mistakes.

I often reflect on the days when San Pedro was a walking/biking town. I was much slimmer and fitter in those days.....

Now San Pedro's roads have mud or dust, sometimes both in one day.

Maybe we could propose a people swap. We can send Caye Caulker the people who simply cannot live with San Pedro's roads, and in return San Pedro can have the folks that can't live without a golf cart!

Now that sounds like a plan, Amanda!
