Does anyone know if it is possible to fly directly from Cancun to Ambergris Caye off of Belize????? I know you can fly from Cancun to Belize city for about $200 USA each/round trip, but wondered about saving the hassles and fly from Cancun directly to Ambergris or Caye Caulker??????? If anyone knows, could you include which airline in your post and prices if you happen to know?????????? Thanks again.

No you can not fly direct from Cancun to Ambergris or Caye Caulker. Immigration and customs is in Belize City.

Actually we have customs and immigration on the island- to fly from Cancun to Belize City is very simple you just have to go via Miami,Houston,Dallas,El Salvador,Charleston-no problem there-if you wish to fly Cancun-Chetumal it is also very simple you just have to go via Mexico City and catch one of the two daily flights

You obviously have not seen the San Pedro airstrip, or better yet, the Caye Caulker "aerodrome". Suffice to say, there are few air options other than through BZE.

Is there any reason that a small plane couldn't fly direct from Cancum to San Pedro if there are customs and immigration on the island?

Is it a legal requirement that all international air traffic go through BZE?

This topic was covered a few years ago and at that time, if I'm not mistaken, all International flights, including private aviation had to clear through BZE. I would imagine that it has something to do with the pilot's flight credentials and verification. Also the GOB likes to know where those private aircraft are at and who they are. Seems like there is a bit of illegal "goods" transported through the country from time to time.
