8,400 persons living on ambergris caye and 17,800 in the Belize rural south district
that's half the population of the district living on Ambergris according to
Central Statistical office Ministry of National Development

8,400 persons legally reside on ambergris caye
2'704 actually voted in the 2006 Town Board Election
1728 voted for UDP Elsa Paz
1054 voted for PUP Don Beto
100 voted independent
102 ballots rejected
apparently 5 and 1/2 thousand people on the island didn't get to vote on how the Island is run.
about a third

Can Residents vote in the local Town Board election? The Town Board doesn't seem to know, they keep referring me to someone else.
I hear it both ways when I ask that question to John Q.and even the Election and boundaries Commission circles around when I try to get a straight answer.
For sure the rules are different for national elections but for local I highly suspect legal residents can vote, but i can't get that confirmed anywhere.they keep saying ask JR.( I think he might be biased so I didn't bother.

But what is a legal resident? I guess it would be a Belize citizen or a British commonwealth citizen that resides on the island (or in Belize Rural South) for a period of 3 months (or is it 6) and has a utility bill to prove such residence (and/or be a dependent of a head of household.)

Oh, and anybody that holds a legal residency card that is not on the QRP can vote in local elections, if they reside in the relevant district.

Something like that.

If 8,400 people legally reside here are they all of voting age? Considering voting is a past-time social event here I would suspect most people that are eligible to vote actually vote.

So is it 8,400 legal residents of which 5,696 are kids?

Yes, residents here 6 months or more can vote in town board or city council elections, but only citizens can vote in general elections. Elections and Boundreys 222 4042 or contact your local UDP or PUP officials for more info.

Katie,
What your saying is good news and the answer I'm hoping to get.
How did you find this out?
excuse me I'm just trying to be absolutely sure. when I call the Elections and Boundreys folks they seem to differ with in the department.
They ...some of them, say 18 years old, residents ,but not American residents, only residents from common wealth. One told me if it was a village yes Americans could vote but if its a town they can't! I'm not believing that the people I'm talking to in government are sure. Who did you get your information from?

The government is currently in the hands of original San Pedro villagers and has some romantic appeal of being governed by those people.
The Island has experienced extremely rapid growth and Development, planning has suffered from a number of directions creating major problems. Current government is burdened with nepotistic problems and old school ideas that are not tools that work in this new environment. I'm hoping to introduce some fresh blood. Thinking it will make government more effective. A campaign to register this majority will create change. Change The Darwinian imperative says, "If we're unwilling to change, someone else will, and go forward."

"only citizens can vote in general elections". I was able as a Commonwealth citizen to obtain a voters card and vote in the last general elections. At that time I wasn't a resident yet and was on a work permit. All I had to show was that I had been in the country for a year.

Amanda, the school house would have to be bigger for that many kids
I'm betting the majority of the people on the island are card holding residents in Belize of America Nationally and have big opinions about no say in government ruling over their investment of a home here.
Think of it from a realtor's angle,' you can not only buy fee simple but vote in local elections about what happens to your million dollar home.'

Change happens slow in small towns. Mel Spain is not an islander and is now the Standard Bearer.
