I just read on Lee's Blog that Popeye passed away. What a character - I'm glad to have met him and aquired some of his art. Peace be with you, Popeye. My condolences to his family.
Popeye was pretty much a regular fixture around front street. His art was displayed on the fence outside Alberts Market. He was well known for his simple art with simple sayings usually done on 8 by 10 to 16 by 20 inch peices of wood. He was mabe 5ft 10 to 6 ft tall. Thin with medium dreads. Somtimes he would hang out in front of Rasta Pasta. It is said he used to be an airline pilot prior to coming to Caye Caulker, where he fell hard into some of the islands ways. His love Olive is still here but not doing all that well. I am sure someone has a photo of him they could post. His artwork is everywhere, also in alot of rental units.
