A few interesting (!) facts recently published by someone in Seattle. Can't vouch for their reliability. Every day in the US:-

75000 shipping containers pass through US ports
US$300 million spent on Iraq war
39 SUVs sold
4.3 billion sheets of office paper used
305 million aluminum cans discarded (now that would help with Holy Cross landfill)
6300 people imprisoned
1 billion plastic shopping bags used, plus
1.1 million brown paper bags
81 people killed by handguns
400,000 cell phones discarded
33,000 commercial flights made
over 1/2 billion plastic drinks bottles discarded

Although I'm sure these stats are supposed to 'shock' us for some reason. They seem quite a bit off to me (not that I'm an authority on this type of thing, but I had a minute to do some surfin'..).

For example, 81 people killed by handguns everyday in the US? According to census.gov, 14,249 people were murdered in 2004 in the US. That is about 39 people a day. Assuming everyone was murdered with gun that still leaves roughly 42 people who die everyday by handguns but were not murdered. Doesn't make much sense to me either..

They aren't meant to shock, just to fill a few idle moments. The gun one I altered slightly from what was said, which was that in 2004 there were 29569 gun-related deaths in the US. If you're interested see http://www.bullguard.com/curiosities/default.aspx?id=856&campaign=newslettercuriosities.
