I know of a few places such as Denny describes. Makes me quite cynical about any tip that I don't personally put into the intended recipient's hand.

I refused to pay a "compulsory" service charge at a restaurant in Paris once. The food was disgusting and the service worse. They blocked me from leaving and called the police. When the police arrived they told the restaurant to release me or face police charges, and said that if I chose not to pay any of their bill all they could do was take civil action against me. And I had previously thought the French police didn't like the British.

On another subject, I know several hotels which bundle a substantial "service charge" in with the hotel tax and call it all "tax". Visitors generally don't know that isn't true. Apart from being reprehensible, isn't this also illegal?

I will say this... the tips for Live Musicians in Mexico are 3 times better than in Belize. If you want to support Live music in Belize, start by tipping the bands. In that location /environment, gear is not cheap and short lived. Tips help to equalize that.

That's not really a tip, it's a voluntary payment where otherwise there would be none. A "tip" in our main context is an additional payment over and above what should be a proper payment for the goods & service received.

As a business owner who was warned at length the day the bank gave me my credit card machine, to absulutly not charge my customers the 4.5% service charge or they will take my machine away. I am amazed at how many places add on 5% on their credit card charges, Atlantic Bank tells me if these businesses are reported they will remove the machines. Problem is the clerks, sales people, food servers are just doing what the boss says, they probably dont even know the rules. I only know of one place that actually had their machine removed for doing this.
