i posted on the belize forum that i am bringing my 16 year old son to belize between christmas and new years. i am considering placencia / day trips and based on feedback, ambergris caye / day trips. where's the best spot to stay on a.c. that is inexpensive, central to restaurants and nightlife (would anyone mind my bringing a 16 year old out at night?), snorkelling accessible; rustic is fine (no need for a/c). any input would be greatly appreciated

A few budget/moderate places (though prices will be their peak when you're coming) you might think about are the following. They're all fairly centrally located, though The Tides and Coconuts are respectively north and south of town:

(Moderate)
Coconuts
The Tides
Mayan Princess
SunBreeze
Belizean Reef

(Budget/Low Moderate)
Ruby's
San Pedrano
Barrier Reef
Hideaway

No problem with a 16-year-old. My 16-year-old son loves San Pedro.

My 15 year old thought he died and went to heaven while in San Pedro. We took him out at night with us, and he danced and had a wonderful time. Drinking age is 18 and strictly enforced in the nightclubs and he can't go into the casino at all. Must be 21 to enter. But belize me, there will be plenty for him to do. He's already planning his next trip. He wants to take all his buddies for graduation in a few years! LOL Relax and have fun with him. Go fishing, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, etc. These last days of "childhood" are so precious, and the memories you will make will be forever treasured. Debbie

in addition to Lan's list, we stay budget at the Conch Shell Hotel - see webpage on this site. Save $ with a fridge in your room for beverages and snacks!
This is the busy season, many Belizeans go to San Pedro for these Holidays - better to book early!

Another budget hotel right next to Conch Shell is Lily's.....decent rooms....I just booked one for a friend...with a queen size bed...fridge....A/C....own bath for $43 US a night. Not bad! It's beach front...and they have their own restaurant....nice porch on front to sit and view the water and soak up the breeze. A couple doors down from Fido's.
