I'm headed to Ambergris Caye for the first time in January 2008. If my friends bag out on sharing a house, I'm thinking of staying at Ruby's Beachside. Has anyone stayed there or have any other suggestions of places to stay in the budget price range? Thanks....

I stayed at Ruby's... it's not bad, but I would make sure and get a room on the second or 3rd floor. My room was on first floor by the cafe....Needless to say at 4 in the morning they were banging pots and pans around and ppl kept going by the room, so it was a little noisy.... It's not bad for the price though.... If you are looking to save some money.

good call spurs. Ruby's is a no-frills, no-problem place. In January, you likely don't even need the AC room which is more expensive. It's in the middle of everything and the Mrs. and I will likely stay there again in Feb.

I will have a Belikin -- put it on klcman's tab.

Thanks for the feedback. Have gone to St John's for the last two January vacations. Great campground on Cinnamon Beach, but it's about $90 a night for a big tent with cots, whereas it seems I can stay in a hotel room on AC for less than half of that. I've heard that the water is not as clear on the beach in AC until you get out further, but that the snorkeling is more varied than in St John. Can't wait to check it out.

Pedro's has some nice quiet rooms. You'd be good there. Ruby's is noisy as all get out. I like it there but don't recall ever having a decent nights sleep.

Thanks for info on Pedros. I've stayed at Hostels before and it is certainly priced right. Ruby's looks nicer, but won't be any good if it's so noisy that there's no sleep. Sweetjane, hope you have a good visit to Belize. Read your previous travelogue and slide show with great interest...
