Does anyone have information on getting to Belize from Miami via boat. I am traveling with a very large dog. I don't trust putting him in the cargo area of the plane. I would be willing to pay extra time for any extra transit time involved in getting to Miami. Thanks alot

I'm not sure if you can purchase passage on the barge. Hyde Shippin or Mack Freight in Miami would be the people to call. That's a tough one. I have friends that drive down from LA and Houston. Perhaps something could work out for you and dog.

There used to be a FLA to Cancun ferry that might suit your needs. You could then make your way to Corazol. Not sure what kind of problems (or mordida) you would run into with Mexican Customs.

Probably should consider driving down via Mexico if you don't want to fly your pet.

Tampa to Progresso (Merida) ferry used to run a few years back. Cool trip. I'm almost certain it is no longer running. Google and see.

Jason Bloom, we are also tryinig to figure out the best way to get our very large lab and very old papillon to Belize. The best we have come up with is to get an RV and drive through Mexico. I think it will be a wonderful adventure and if we take our time, a great way to explore some of the US. If you and yours are interested in joining up with us, let me know. The trip will happen before the first of the year.
Snowbird, if you have any other options, I would appreciate hearing from you as well.
Thanks

The trip through Mex is awesome. Check out Sanborn's Insurance, these guys give you mile by mile through the entire country. I love the trip at 17, 19, 20 and 25. Haven't been for a while. The roads are great and the people are amazing.

He'll love it! Trust me, my folks did it at 52. Great trip, driving along the deserted dunes along the Gulf of Mexico is pretty amazing. Tampico, Veracruz, Villahermosa, Quatzacolcos, Ciudad del Carmen....all great towns!

I keep telling him to think of it as an adventure, and it won't be quite so overwhelming. He has been reading a lot about the gangs and drug runners in Mexico, and I think he's concerned about having to protect his property (I'm included in that, I think) and being in a foreign country makes it more difficult to be understood. I think it can be done without much problem, at least I'm hoping. But, having others in the "caravan" would help lessen the threat, I'd think.
I have been reading from others about their trip through Mexico, and I find it amazing. I can hardly wait for our trip to begin. I guess you have to have a touch of gypsy blood in you. I think I have more than my share.
