Just curious about currency and recommendations on what to bring.

Should we be getting Belizean currency? US currency? Or is our Canadian funny money accepted?

Are travellers cheques easily cashed? In Columbia, we had some difficulties cashing them as well as using our credit cards.

Any recommendations / suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

US currency works here you just get change in Belize Dollars.

There are a few ATM machines in town that will take bank cards as well.

Travelers cheques, from reading past posts, I would say they are easily cashed. Credit cards are ok too.

US dollars, credit cards, a few American Express travelers checks, and you should be god to go.

Only had 1 problem using Amex Checks trying to pay $60 exit fee at the airport. The customs agent said the signature at the top of the check did not exactly match the signature I quickly used in front of her. She said that because 2 of the letters were not exactly the same her manager would take the $60 out of her pay. Made no sense to me.

Other than that everyone else took them without a problem, no matter how I signed them.

I've heard this before. A friend of mine that owns a bar/restaurant wouldn't take some of my cheques because my signature wasn't a good enough match. He said the bank kicks them back if the sigs aren't close enough. I've never had that problem anywhere else but Belize.

In any event, I rarely use TC's anymore. It is just so easy and convenient to use the ATMs.

Everyone, thanks! This is very helpful information.

A quick question about the ATMs. Do they accept 4-digit PINs only? I know in Columbia and some of the other Central/South American locations that I've been to that the ATM's will not take PIN numbers longer than 4-digits.

Thanks!

Yo Razor. When you sign about 50 of those in the bank, does the last ones signature look anything like the first one? Mine never do. smile

I agree with Bobber and I have always used travelers checks in Belize with no problems what so ever.

I had a problem cashing a TC at BCs (of all places) fer crying out loud. Because the sig was not the same. Is anyones sig the same after several hours of twisting swizzel sticks?
