I am moving with my job to Ambergris Caye for 6mnths this fall. I have never been but have lived practically everywhere else in Central America, so I'm not too concerned about the little surprises Belize may offer! Quick question - what "essentials" should I plan on bringing? From the previous posts, is it worth bringing in as much non-perishable food/booze or should I just try and find the local grocery store and save the hassle? How about linens? I only ask this because Belize seems to be at least twice as expensive as Costa Rica, Panama etc.

Thanks in advance!

Never mind the food and booze. Just bite the bullet and pay the price. Bringing linens might be a good idea though...limited selection here.

Thanks Jesse - that's pretty much what I expected. I'll see what other goodies I can cram into my bags and see what happens!

Also any toiletries that you like - they are available but not always the variety that you might like.

Trail mix is a must. Snack foods here are very pricey.
A clock with batteries (and extra batteries) as the electric goes out a lot; even though sometimes just for a few seconds it sends the clocks crazy.
Flashlight & batteries.
Towels
Not a lot of clothes - Nothing fancy - very light weight shorts and a couple of tank tops. T-shirts & tank tops can be purchased here - not so lucky with walking shorts.
2 swim suits so you always have a dry one.
Mask, fins, snorkel.
Sun Screen & Insect repellent
Camera
Laptop computer - there's free wifi all over the place
Good attitude!

A decent pot and a fry pan is also good item depending on how much you plan on cooking. (we did not have when we came and wished we did)

We did a dollar store trip before coming to help us get kitchen set up and brought decent cutlery too.

tacogirl,
Just out of curiousity, how much duty/tax did you pay on your kitchen wares? This is assuming you are not on the QRP.
