NEMO hereby advises the public that since 3:00 p.m. when it issued a Hurricane Watch from Belize City to Corozal and a Tropical Storm Watch for the rest of the country the country is now in Phase Red 1.

The public is advised to continue monitoring reports from the National Meteorological Service of Belize for specific updates on Hurricane Dean.


The center of Hurricane Dean was located near latitude 17.3 north...longitude 76.8 west and is moving toward the west near 20 mph. A motion between west and west – northwest is expected over the next 24 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph with hurricane force winds extending outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical storm winds extending outward up to 205 miles.

NEMO continues to strongly urge persons living in the Cayes and Northern Belize to continue monitoring the movement of Hurricane Dean and to begin to take precautionary measures to protect life and property.

1. Put into effect your family hurricane plan and begin to move to safe grounds throughout today and tomorrow.

2. People moving by boats should be aware that squally conditions may be experienced on the sea by Monday night.

3. People living in low-lying and valley areas should be aware that heavy rain fall is expected and this may cause flash floods.

NEMO hereby advises the public to take note that the Preliminary Phase has passed and we are now at Phase Red 1 which means that Belize is likely to experience Tropical Storm conditions within the next 36 hours.
