Damage in the Mexico Rocks Area
|
|
Several home owners asked me to assess the damage at their houses, and here is a report, from North to South:
* Waldo, your house is ok, minor damage to the dock.
* Costa Maya: OK, trees damaged, some windows that weren't boarded up, and part of the dock and the palapa - dive shop is ok.
* Ann, Bill and Nancy: Gutter is gone, dock has split (whatever that means) and telephone cable is broken.
* Stann: All OK, thatch on the dock has gone. Cliff and Joanne stayed the night with Carla.
* Cliff and Joanne's house: OK, no damage, dock is a total loss though.
* Portofino: OK, some damage to the dock, few water leaks, but will be fixed by tomorrow morning.
* Jim: No damage, but the dock has lifted up where it comes on the seawall (as I told you it would).
* Will dock seems to be gone; haven't been South yet, but will do so later and report.
* Keane's house, spoke to the caretaker, and there is damage to the dock - the thatch and the end have gone.

I am new to this - it is one thing to sit and read, another to become an active participant! I am seeking any news of the status of Tobacco Caye in the aftermath of Dean. I noticed one other person inquired earlier but I haven't yet been able to dredge up any responses to the question.

Thank you Jan for these updates.
If you happen to walk furthur south towards Mata Chica, could you keep an eye open for our pier. It is two piers north of Mata Chica's pier. Before Dean it had a swim deck and large palapa on it. We just left San Pedro 3 weeks ago after spending a month enjoying our "brand new pier" and planning the building of our home. Oh, well. At least it sounds as though everyone is alive and healthy.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,

Hey Jan, thank you so much for the update and the pictures. It gives us a better idea how everything looks like!
Just a Q... Paul and Cynthia have asked for an update about their house, and they are very worried!
Can you please send someone over to see what the status is, and let them know?
It is very late here... whished I was with you!

Hello from Colorado! Very glad that things are as good as they seem from what I have read! We have property on south Ambergris, also a pier, we were wondering if anyone had seen or heard about damage? We 4 1/2 miles south. Thanks!

Jan: Your updates are wonderful! Have you had a chance to go further south than the Kean's house? In the picture you posted of Cliff and Joanne, my caretaker, Maria is there with Javier and Consuelo. I have not been able to contact her and determine the condition of our house and property. I am past the point of frazzled nerves here not knowing what has happened at our place. Oh, and if you see Maria again, would you please tell her she needs to get in touch with Sonny and Marsha? Thanks!!!!!!

Went South till Playa Blance and here is the Damage update:
* Will Nunez' pier is gone, but no damage to the house. The beach has serious erosion damage though.
* JD, your house has got some Thatch damage at the veranda and the tip of the roof.
* Grey House: ok, the pool was being cleaned by the caretaker.
* Curtis house: big mess in the garden, but no damage, minor damage to the dock.
* La Perla: Also big mess in the garden, think they are all ok besides some thatch damage. The seawall is mostly gone, and the dock got lifted at the ramp - nice detail, the 2 ornamental flowerpots that where left on the dock are miraculously still there!
* Xaman Ek: Dock looks like it will have to be replaced now, no further damage, even the thatch roofs seemed intact.
* Kean's House: the end of the dock with the thatch has disappeared.
* Sally's house is ok, no damage, only the dock came up.
* Playa Blanca: no damage, not even the dock.
Had to turn back, as it is almost impossible to ride the beach by bicycle, and I have to get Portofino up and running by tomorrow.

Thanks for all the updates! It means alot to those of us who love beautiful Belize!!! It's hard to be here at home watching it on T.V., there has been very little information about Ambergris, or the statis of things. When you talk about the houses south, how far south? We have two properties south, a house by Casa Carib and land further south with a peir. Thanks for any information!

Sounds like things are in fairly good shape! Joanne and Cliff, my son Derek was asking about you and the hurricane this morning. Really happy to hear you're okay! Same for everyone else, but I must say Derek and I have very fond memories of his "Belizean Grandma and Grandpa" and your guest house.... Love from Sue and Derek in Naples, FL

Hi---If you hear back from Mata Chica/Mata Grande area re: damage/status---I hope I'll find your posting about it. New on here--having trouble keeping track of the vaious threads! But we've got a parcel we're going to build on that's right near Mata Grande Studios! Kind of wondering how our area fared-sure glad it sounds like not nearly the damage on AC as I'd feared watching the tv news up here in the states!! And it sounds like everyone's ok!!Wonderful!

If anyone in the Playa Blance area could pass a message to Javiar @ the Kean's: Please have him use NO BEL electric while the power is coming up. He needs to use the wind-turbin and solar while the grid stabilizes, he has enough power to for years. Thx MK

That you Mike? It's Marsha at the white house immediately south of Playa Blanca. Brooke's mom. I haven't been able to get in touch with our caretaker, Maria and so we still don't know what kind of damage we got at our place or if our dog is ok. If you do talk to Javier, please ask him to have Maria contact us right away. And Jan.....if you speak to Javier, please ask him to tell Maria to leave the electric main breaker off until BEL is up and running for a while. I have some good UPC batteries for the computers but I just don't want to take a chance and from what I hear, the electric wires to the pier may be in the water. I appreciate all the news and info I'm getting from you guys. I can't thank you all enough.

Laura: As soon as I hear anythng I will let you know but I think I saw your palapa in one of Jan's recent pictures. If I am counting piers right. Look at his pics and see the palapa up close to the beach? The next palapa after that should be yours. The short one is Patrick Callahan's at Playa Blanca Villa. Hope my estimate is right and that your pier and palapa are fine. good to 'meet you too! Marsha

Jan, I believe that Marsha is right. The picture you took looking south from North of the Playa Blanca House shows our Palapa still standing. Thank you so much Marsha for noticing. And thank you so much Jan for the diligent effort to make all of us nervous Americans feel so much better from so far away. We all feel so helpless. My pier is one pier south of Marsha's, pier and house. Her's is the white house just south of Patrick's Playa Blanca House. If you have the time could you take a look to see if we have any damage? Unbelievable!!!!
Thank you, Thank you, I can sleep better tonight. My 8 year old son is thrilled. Laura

Thanks Jan. Yes, I am talking about the newer house that sits between The Keans and Callahans (with Gaz's house set back at an angle behind it). There are (were) two Palapa's on the pier - one at the end with swim platform and one midway over a boat hoist. Thank you VERY much! Tim

Jan, you have been such a blessing to us that have property up there. It's such a helpless feeling when I can't be there and need to depend on good people like you to keep us informed. And to compound the feeling, still can't establish any cell phone communication with our caretakers. And I can't beleive that you were still up at midnight!!!!!! Thanks for everything! Marsha

Hey Jan....
Thanks so much for the photos. I appreciate you taking the time to send them to me. I was wondering in your walks, if you or anyone has seen the green bench that used to sit on the dock. I am the property next to what used to be Kitty's. It weighs a ton so who knows where it went, maybe in the water. If you see it, or anyone else sees it, have the time and manpower, could you please put it somewhere on the property. Again, what would I do with out you and your great staff at Portofino. You are the greatest! ANN
