We are planning a trip in October. How badly were the reefs damaged by Dean?

I haven't seen any coral thrown up on shore - which was the case back in 1998 after Hurricane Mitch. So although I haven't had a chance to go out to the reef with a mask, I am guessing that there is little or possibly even no damage to the reef in the Ambergris Caye area.

I think you're probably right Amanda. Afterall the surges and swells were not that big here. Takes a lot less to do the dock damage and most of it was farther north or old and poorly built docks. Many of them lower than recommended. Hard to imagine any noticable damage to the reef that's withstood thousands of tropical surges much larger than these.

I don't know about other parts of the island, but here just north of the bridge the wind came in from the lagoon side so I would guess the reef is intact.

YES, as a boater, I too would very much like to know if the reef cut or entrance has been damaged or changed, specifically as you enter from sea at San Pedro, and also as you enter from sea into the Eastern Channel near English Cay. Have any of the sea buoys been moved? Have any nearby coral heads been toppled over and are now laying in wait to snag my hull? Can anybody who knows anything about ocean-going yachts please confirm that no damage or changes have occurred from Hurricane Dean that would affect visiting boaters? Of if they have, what should we look out for and where? Thanks very much!

I think you'll find no change at all.

Pedro2, I think Capt Pat wants someone to "Confirm" no changes, Not "think" (Guess) there are no changes.

Spent all day Saturday and most of the day Sunday at the reef w/ Tulu. While I fished and snorkled, he dove for lobster. His view was that the reef was not damaged at all and looked very healthy. I saw (and caught) way more fish than usual. I did notice what I thought was an abnormal amount of fan coral "uprooted" for lack of a better term, but other than that everything was beautiful!
