New update: I went to the hospital last night hoping to find him as awake and alert as the day before. He was snoring and there was no way I could wake him. I think they have him sedated so he doesn't get rowdy.
When I got home there was a message from his daughter Joanne asking that I call her back which I did. I'm still in shock over our conversation. She spoke to the case worker yesterday to inform them she would arrive in Houston next Wed. until Sat. to try & take care of "powers of attorney", cleaning out his apt. to stop paying rent, etc. The social worker said it was good she was arriving then because THEY PLAN TO RELEASE HIM NEXT WEDNESDAY. They said he would be released to a skilled nursing home facility, that his daughter (who knows nothing about Houston) needs to choose one, that Medicare will pay for the first 20 days, then the family would have a co-pay of $125 a day for 80 days until Medicaid kicks in! Joanne says there is no way she can pay $125 a day and is having a hard time coping.
If they could get him to Philly or NJ he would go into a similar facility close to his parents. The problem once again is the cost of transportation.
Joanne asked me to share her email address so if anyone has questions she will be happy to answer. She truly appreciates all the good wishes and concern from people on this board as well as information on possible resources for help. Her email is towner609@comcast.net
I was the one who suggested a possible fundraiser not actually on A/C but through people on the board who might want to help. Maybe those of us who do want to help could just send money to the family or have a bank account set up that they could access for his care. It was just an idea. If anyone has any other ideas to help they please pass them on to either me or Joanne.
Thanks to everyone.
