I was planning on doing some deep sea fishing on Sunday. But sombody mentioned to me that they read in the paper warning that eating Baracuda can get you sick. There is disease on the reef that affects the Baracuda?

Any opinion about that?

I had also seen a restaurant special of Baracuda steak.

I'll dispose of the Barracuda responsibly wink if you just drop it of at my dock at White Sands Cove be sure and keep it iced down so the lab results will be accurate. smile
sorry... I'm serious now this comes up from time to time ...we simply don't have a problem with Ciguatera in this area.I've been eateing Baracuda for all of the 20 years I've lived here and have no problem with it. Its my favorite fish dish.
I'll spare you the details of the bacteria and its history on the planet.
In Florida ...could be different but not here.

OMG SIN. That baby is waaaaaaaay too happy. What are you feeding her? Better start saving for the quincey anos now. I'm sure I spelled that wrong. Now they want a golf cart, an ipod, a laptop, an Ifone. Imagine what they'll want in 13 years or so. [shudder]. My new rule is no more kids. Maybe if I find a hottie single mom and get a head start? I'm too old for all that.

A friend of mine suffered severely from Ciguatera. It was most of year before he was back to work and other activities. I believe he has some permanent nerve damage. He caught it in the Corn Islands of Nicaragua. Not quite far enough from Belize for me!

We've had cases here, just talking about the Rotary bbq on CC about 15 or so yrs ago where many got very sick. Hot feels cold, cold feels hot. Can be quite serious and barra is not the only fish that has it.

Barrow gets eaten here in PG as fast as it comes ashore. I have never heard of a case here in PG but I do stick with the smaller ones just in case.

Good logic in that dabunk
Its not the bacteria itself thats the problem its their byproduct thats toxic and it takes years to build up in the fishes body. So eating the young and those that have short life cycles is good advice but i still contend we don't have the problem here.
It is a deep subterranean bacteria that can surface from cataclysmic events like earth quakes and gets into local food chains. when this happens it usually stays in the area it starts in.Florida east coast is a problem area.
Sometimes fish swim long distance for reasons like hurricane or red tide and its possible an older fish traveled into an area and made someone sick but an isolated incident is my guess and not an indicator its in Belize.

As Kate said, it can happen here. Just like asking to take chloroquine on Ambergris or CC. Does it happen, yes but how often will you get malaria on the Caye? Mostly just something to be aware on the chance you see or hear of someone suffering with a strange malady.
