Why don't you supply further details such as how much a scholarship would cost per child per year, and how many years each child would attend this school. Also would there be additional expenses such as books, supplies, uniforms, class trips etc.

Thanks

I would think that the Holy Cross is stretched to its limits at the moment.

Sometimes the private schools are simply in a more convenient location for the parents, or other siblings are already enrolled. Maybe the students have been attending for a few years and the parents would like to keep some consistency in their kids lives.

Isla Bonita is a great school, good teachers, good values are taught, nice facilities.

The Island Academy also has a scholarship program.

Is it right to think that poor kids should go to free schools - and kids whose parents have money should go to private schools and not have to attend these schools alongside poor kids?

Kids attending La Isla Bonita are requesting scholarship funding - you don't have to give to this cause if you don't want to, but I don't think it is fair to try and disuade others just because there are other charities vying for donation dollars.

Nothing personal Ernie - I'm sure you know that.

Nothing personal taken Amanda. How many charities/people can the island support? The RC school needs support, HC needs support, the library needs support etc, etc. JMHO

Well a tiny little portion of $60 million dollars in tax revenue would be helpful if it stayed on the island instead of going to central goverment.

There is so much need here in terms of education. One problem is that we have a tendency to "adopt" our favorites and it leads to a skewed pathway for charitable dollars. All the students of San Pedro deserve the best education possible. I would love to see the development of a cohesive group that devises a fair and equitable distribution of charitable dollars. The way it is now, groups are tempted to disparage others to appear better qualified to receive money. Schools with equal need get unequal treatment. Schools with strong PR divert dollars to themselves and away from equally deserving students. It sometimes ends up bringing out the worst in us and not the best. Isla Bonita is a wonderful school with educated and caring teachers. Any bit you can afford to help with will be used directly for student learning needs.

What is most important is that all kids get an good quality education and be in school no matter which one it is.

The Principle from RC School has been been working together with HC school to help make sure that the kids are in the right place. Both schools are very stretched to the limit so scholarships to Isla Bonita are a great option and hopefully it will work out. I have heard nothing but good things about that school. (friends have kids who go there)
