While on vacation on Ambergris Caye. We're finally coming down again this January, and we usually take some sort of excursion (Corozal, Lamanai, etc.). What's the most unusual excursion you've taken--that was enjoyable?
I'm even thinking of boating/flying over to St. George's Caye.
Hire a boat to take you on a complete circuit of the island. All day, beautiful. Start in the back lagoon, seeing the red ibis and roseate spoonbills on the bird islands. Ride up the back side of the island stopping at one or two mayan sites - or just at the ranger station (picnic tables - have lunch - bar-b-q or whatever ....) then proceed through the cut that is the boarder between Mexico and Belize. Snorkel in the Bacalar Chico reserve area, have an exciting run outside the reef as you head south and then come back in at Basil Jones ---- a great day. We do this on average once a year with Daniel Nunez of Tanisha Tours. It is not a scheduled tour - you need a bunch of people and a special arrangement. If you want to really get a sense of the island this is the way to do it.
Tony is a lot of fun, nice small skiff, good for 4 to 6. We take the boat for the day and go up to the reserve, walk Rocky Point, find the old Mayan wells, BBQ, snorkel, even fish sometimes. 011-501-602-2884
Last year we went all around the island and to Bacala Chica, through the Mayan cut and did 3 snorkel stops. It was amazing and I fulfilled my life long dream of swimming with a manatee in the wild. She was about 2000 bls and just kept swimming around us. Also, saw a 600 lb sea turtle. We had a lunch that the captain and crew fixed on a beach which was delicious. An amazing day.
I'd highly recommend it. Searious Adventures is who arranged it for us. I believe it was $85 a person. Fabulous day! Just take plenty of bug spray cause the mosquitos are awful up that way.
