Marco Gonzales most probably was an island unto itself.
Famous Belizean archaeologist Herman Smith told Bubba the absence of early preclassic Mayan artifacts on Ambergris could have be as simple as the island did not exist during those times.’ The post classic period ran from 900 AD to the arrival of the Spanish in 1521. This is fairly strong evidence that the southern ¾ of Ambergris caye is less than 2000 years old and the Marco Gonzalez Maya Site located near the southern tip of Ambergris Caye was a beautiful little island. It was first recorded archaeologically in 1984 by Dr. Elizabeth Graham and Dr. David M. Pendergast. Theirs and more recent archaeological studies of the Marco Gonzalez site by Dr. S. Mazzullo support the islands age of 2000 years and the separation of Marco Gonzalez.
