Hi there,
I have been lurking here for a month while planning my first trip to AC and have gotten so much great info from you all, I just want to say thanks. I still have a couple of questions that I was hoping someone could answer.
First, I will be staying at Ruby's (because of the feedback here and the cost) but I was wondering if that limits me to the beach in front of it. Is it possible to just walk down the beach until a suitable spot is found or are the beaches private to the resort that is in front of it? Also, I understand that shorts are fine for AC, but if I plan on a trip to the mainland to see some ruins, should I bring long pants and sleeves? And lastly, I have seen this question before but am still unsure. If I spend a week on AC with only 1 day trip to the mainland, do I really need anti-malarial medication. If you guys say yes, I'm calling the doc tomorrow.

Thank you for any help and am soooo looking forward to being there the first week of Oct.
Can't wait,
SStellar72

SSTellar,
My husband was born and raised in NO. He was born during Marti Gras! Lived most of his childhood in Meterie, just across the bridge. He loved AC!!! There is a cajun gentleman on AC that owns a bar or restaurant. We met him at Fido's. He was very nice and was thrilled to meet a fellow cajun. Ask around. You might find him. Damn. Wish I could remember his name.

Hi! We will be on AC Oct 11-16 and are also from Louisiana! My husband was born and raised on the West Bank of NO, and I am from New Iberia/Lafayette area. This will be our first trip to Belize.

You can wander the beach all over, no privacy rules exactly, if a particular place is packed full i suppose they might ask you to move down, but i have never had that happen to me yet, in many many wanders...

i always wear shorts to the mainland for a trip to the ruins, but bring a jacket and pants just in case you come back late in the boat. If its dark, it can get a little chilly on that trip from the mainland back to the island. 90% of the time you are back before dark, but every now and then, when you take a little extra time to see the incredible variety of wildlife, you get back late.

The bonus to lateness is the incredible sky that you see as you come across in the dark...

eat no medicine- no malarial whatever. you won't need it...

Thanks so much for all your good advice. And hello to all who have replied from LA. I really look forward to getting down there and possibly meeting some of the regular posters. If you see me and my husband say hi. We are not hard to spot. I have blue hair and my hubby has a bone through his nose. So if you have seen my posts, please do not be shy. But anyway, I look forward to getting there. 3 weeks and counting!!

Oh,oh... that bone is gonna cause problems at immigration! Unless it has a USDA stamp on it.
