Is quinine naturally pink or do they add dye so the bartenders can easily differentiate? Just curious...

I've wondered that for years! I think it's the Fanta brand tonic that is pink. I ordered a vodka tonic at a bar in Caye Caulker several years ago and questioned the color. Tastes just like the tonic I'm used to in the U.S... just prettier. smile

Its dye added to the Tonic smile Its for the bartender to know the difference between soda and tonic.

Once you pop the top off the soda bottles they look generic. The tops identify what is inside the bottle. Once the top comes off all of the bottles are simply fanta bottles with different coloured liquids.

You can tell the difference between soda water and tonic water by the smell (but who wants a bartender's nose in their drink) and also if you shake the bottle - soda water barely fizzes, tonic water comes flying out and gets everywhere.

Yep, used to be a bartender in Belize.

Strangest thing is how it turns clear in the sun...loses all pink color.

You can't count on the tonic being pink...sometimes they add the colouring...sometimes they don't. Surprise!!!
