I've wondered that for years! I think it's the Fanta brand tonic that is pink. I ordered a vodka tonic at a bar in Caye Caulker several years ago and questioned the color. Tastes just like the tonic I'm used to in the U.S... just prettier.
Once you pop the top off the soda bottles they look generic. The tops identify what is inside the bottle. Once the top comes off all of the bottles are simply fanta bottles with different coloured liquids.
You can tell the difference between soda water and tonic water by the smell (but who wants a bartender's nose in their drink) and also if you shake the bottle - soda water barely fizzes, tonic water comes flying out and gets everywhere.
A good bartender(myself included) can pick up an open bottle of both tonic & soda, swirl them one time and tell you which is which. They do it all the time. It is a drama if they are mixed up. The face of the customer tells it all. Scotch and Tonic?==yuk
see,, now that's part of the reason i drink belikin. it's in a dark bottle. you can't see when it's 'turned', you can't see the bugs or ciggy butts, or chicken bones floating in it! just drink in the goodness! with no worries or concerns.
