Good luck to folks on the north. It will surely assist the SP Police Dept. a lot.

Thanks for bringing it up Elbert.

Thanks Peter,
I took that post down. After reading it again It did sound as if I might be a member. I didn't mean to imply that.
I copied it from an email they sent me.

The jury is still out on that Peter, I need more information and I'm really sorry i missed the meeting.
maybe you can answer a question for me.
"the Special Constables unit that is being set up and funded by the SPBA."
This statement really concerns me.
Who are these 'special constables' are they trained professionals or am I going to have a band of vigilantes playing policeman roaming my neighborhood?

Remember the vigilante squad of years ago? No good!
Something about emotionally unstable drunks with loaded pistols...

Working with the community and the Police Department, the SPBA has committed to assisting the police by funding 4 Special Constables to patrol the area. These Special Constables have already been trained, but were not active due to a lack of funding. They will be hired full-time for a period of 1 year, ensuring that they have job security.

I believe that the newspapers mentioned that the Special Constables in question were actually trained by the police. However the program was shelved due to a lack of funds.

Yes special constables are trained to conduct their duties in a professional manner.

I used to be a special constable back in the early '90's. I "retired" to raise the kids.

I have met quite a few enthusiatic young men that are applying for Special Constable training. As far as I can tell they are not emotionally unstable drunks, nor are they vigilantes. They are concerned citizens that want the island to be safe for their loved ones and the tourists industry which is our bread and butter.

As Tacoboy mentioned there is a distinct lack of funds available to aid in hosting the training, equiping and operations of the Special Constables unit. A small group of concerned businesses has been funding limited activities. We have seen some big results from this program (mainly behind the scenes) and hope that with additional support the program can get back into full swing.

If more people put their money (or their time and efforts) where the mouths are, we would have more results and less problems.

This actually does not make me feel better.
It sounds like the same group to me.
A citizens vigilante group beating the bushes with radios and flashlights thinking there trained police is much less desirable than a few criminals.
Amanda your helping my case, thanks
