Just had a question about Belize's exchange rates..............is it true that the exchange rate there never changes from 2 to 1 for USD and 1 to 1 for CDN ???????????? With the current rate of CDN to USD we are probably better not to use the ATMs against our CDN accts, but, to exchange our CDN into USD travellers cheques, right????????? Any trouble cashing travellers cheques on the mainland or on the Cayes??????? Thanks again for the info provided on this site. We are under 60 days to go now. It's minus 30 with the windchill here today, so you can imagine that we are trying to countdown the days quickly!!!!!!!!!!!

is it true that the exchange rate there never changes from 2 to 1 for USD - yes

and 1 to 1 for CDN - no, CDN dollars are not generally accepted except at the bank and the exchange rate is poor.

exchange our CDN into USD travellers cheques, right - right

Any trouble cashing travellers cheques on the mainland or on the Cayes - no

As far as I know, using the ATM on my Canadian account did not deplete my account dollar for dollar.

According to http://www.xe.com/ucc/full.php the exchange rate today is
1.00 BZD = 0.506607 CAD or 1.00 CAD = 1.97411 BZD

Or $400 BZ is $202 and change CDN

You won't get that rate of exchange here. Even the exchange rate for US$ isn't 2 for 1 at the bank, more like $1.985. Better to buy US$ in Canada to use here.

Last year Bank of Montreal gave me market rate less 2 cents on the dollar on my ATM withdrawals at Belize Bank.

That said, I try to bring enough US cash and US$ Travelers Cheques so that I don't have to make withdrawals at all. However I also brought my sons with me last year and they were kinda hard on the wallet.

Hmm, I guess I'd better check the bank account and see what I was charged. Fortunately, I started off with a pretty good wad of US cash and just started with the ATM when that got used up.
