We're going to Ambergris for the first time for our honeymoon in November. We're trying to figure out the best place to stay, and $ isn't really a big factor. Any suggestions for a resort style hotel that is not too far from town, but far enough to be quite, with a/c and cable tv? What is the cost to rent golf cart?

If money is absolutely no object, I'd say Cayo Espanto, a small four-villa resort on a postage-stamp size island just back of Ambergris Caye, is the # 1 honeymoon spot on or near the island. You have your own butler and meals are brought to your villa, where you can lounge on Egyptian cotton sheets with the walls folded back, just steps from your own private splash pool.

Second best for a private honeymoon on Ambergris Caye is probably Mata Chica up on the north end of the island. Stylish thatch cabanas and new villas, with a good restaurant. No pool, though.

If you want to be fairly near town, I'd recommend one of the following: Villas at Banyan Bay (2-bedroom units are very nice and have jacuzzis), Victoria House or Banana Beach. All of these are 1 1/2 to 2 miles south of town.

Golf carts are priced about like a rental car in the U.S. -- US$60 for 24-hour day.

we stayed @ Caribbean Villas. They are a lot less expensive than the others and very friendly! they are out of town (so quiet) but close enough to walk. they also rent out golf carts, bicycles are free (and a lot of fun). No TV, but that is not necessary, there is so much else to do (after all, it is your honeymoon!) CV was perfect for us, wonderful scenery, tonnes of birds, snorkeling @ the end of the pier, friendly owners/staff/customers. and, since it was cheaper, we could afford to spend a week in other parts of Belize (highly recommend Caye Caulker @ Chocolates, visit the Cayo District, maybe venture to OrangeWalk, see Placencia) Whereever you stay, definitely do some snorkeling/diving. if you snorkel, ask for Alfonse, he is a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy yourself, we sure did!
