I am looking at the Sail and snorkel tour from Woody's Wharf

Has anyone done this one?

2 snorkel stops, sightsee for 2 hrs. $50 pp
( is there really that much to see there?)

Sounds like a good deal, water taxi is $15US. I believe,
I love CC , the view from the split is amazing, things are much slower on Caye Caulker. I'm staying there this trip & doing a day trip to S.P. to see my friends.
have a great trip!

What is the split? but I want to know is there a difference between the 2 cayes. I would rather spend the 2 hours doing something other than shopping or just walking around the town.

San Pedro is 10x more developed than Caye Caulker. We have a sprinking of hotels and restaurants, the largest hotel probably has 20 rooms. Our streets are still all sand (and mud sometimes) and we have very few motorized vehicles. Our population is around 1400. We are more laid back and less expensive than our neighbor to the north. A full lobster dinner will cost you around 25-30 bzd.

The split is the division between north CC and south CC. It's just to the north of the village. It was created by a hurricane, I believe Hattie in 1961 (? anyone).

I was about to post a photo of it but I realise I don't know how to.

We hope to do a similar trip when we're in SP Feb. 5 - 13. Sounds like a nice day-trip to me. Anyone have other recommendations? Is it just as easy to take the water taxi and go at your own pace if you don't want to squeeze in some snorkeling that day? From what I've heard, a couple of hours (at least) in Caye Caulker sounds like a slice of heaven. Thanks for the great info on this board!

The image I had in mind was:-
.

It shows how strong the tidal currents are through the split. Since the hurricane it's scoured out to about 50' deep.

Thanks islabonita - I'd forgotten that I already had an account there.

Awesome aerial photo Pedro.. wow , just wow.

Well I want to snorkel as much as possible and relax but 2 hours of walking around in the hot sun is not appealing to me.

Awesome picture of the split Pedro 2, glad you found it.

Go to the Split. Takes less than 10 minutes to walk from the water taxi stand. Unless you stop at the Rainbow for the best shrimp burrito you can imagine and get caught up in the amazing view at the Rainbow.

Go to the Split. Snorkel, sunbathe, drink and enjoy a breathe taking view. You will be glad you did.

It is a great day trip and there really isn't all that much walking.

So there is no need for a guide at this split? water safe? we will have snorkeling vests on.

Veeeeerrrrrrrryyyyyyy cool picture, Peter.

I made a trip over there one time last year. The current was rushing! I'd jump in at the shore and whoooooosh, I was getting back out on the other side of the bar. Scampering back and doing it all over again. Must have done it 10 times. My friends had a mighty good laugh at my expense, not that I minded a bit.

Presumably the current changes direction and strength with the tides?

I've heard that the tide is what dictates the strength of the current, but can't vouch for that. Sounds reasonable though, doesn't it?

Yes, I figured. Still, must have been warm. I see head's bobbing in the water.

Nice pic dated Dec. 18, 2007 on the Caye Caulker Chronicles page. Did you see it?

Okay so today I get this email that I sent regarding water taxi and told them I was staying at Corona del Mar..so now I am really confused..

You do not need to make reservations but I can still make them for you. Our address is #10 North Front Street, If you are coming from the International Airport, you would need to take a cab. It is about 20 - 25 minutes drive to our terminal. We also offer pick-up service which costs $25.00 us dlls for 1-3 persons.

Regards
Anna

So the water taxis are not centrally located in San Pedro?

The e-mail above is information on how to get from the International Airport (mainland, where you arrive in country) to the water-taxi area in Belize City, and thence by water taxi to either CC or AC. To catch the water taxi to CC from San Pedro, go to the pier by the Tackle Box in the heart of San Pedro.
Check the CC schedule and then go when you like.
The tour with three snorkel stops and a lunch stop at CC is a pretty good deal - you'll probably be doing snorkeling during your visit anyway, so this is a way to combine adventures. If you are concerned enough about water-safety to wear a life-vest when swimming, it might be best for your to do most of your water activities in the company of a good guide - they are trained to take care of you and show you things you would not see on your own. The local tour guides are great company - you get a chance to learn about local things and make a new friend. I also recommend the Rainbow on CC for lunch .......... love that place!

Wow, thanks Diane.. you had me thinking twice... I have a friend with the same name as yours and I KNOW she has never been to Belize....

Dh and I have snorkeled with guides in GCayman, Cozumel, PRico and planning on a guide to Mexico Rocks and Hol Chan.. etc.. just wanted to do some of our own without restrictive time in the water. I am packing 2 vests as usual and was just not sure about the strong current I had read about in the split.

thanks for the clarification...:)
