I see, well he should be able to purchase his own coverage and plan independently from BCBS. Best of luck.

I have sent a "feeler" out to BCBS, but I get the impression that this is a company for Americans. My friend is Canadian, but we shall see there. In the meantime though, I will look into your submission K, but the acro does suggest another US co. Still nothing ventured .. as they say.

We have used Universal Medical Services insurance, Belize City. called CHAPS, its $30US a month and pays 80% of services and meds. We have been very happy with the services and doctors, We have had Colonoscopys done at $40, mamagragm, $11, abdominal ultrasound at $15, lots of lab work, Xrays etc. we have been impressed with the modern equipment also. We have joined with a group of people and do get a lower rate as a group.

Chaps sounds like an interesting option. How many people do you need for a group rate?

Amedex is not sold exclusively to Americans. It is a US based company, but does not restrict coverage to Americans. Give it a try. It's excellent coverage.

Universal Health Services was - and hopefully will remain - a good hospital and care facility. The medical plan they offer applies to the UHS faclity only. It's a great program but it is no subsitute for a comprehensive international medical insurance policy.

There are limits to the types of treatments offered in Belize, and the some of the serious stuff you just cannot get treated here. The major medical items are what cost the most and what you really need the "major medical" policies for.

Amedex offers things like air-ambulance (jet to miami) coverage, you can get a hip replaced, a by-pass, chemo, etc covered by this policy. It costs much more, but IMHO if you can afford it, it's well worth the money.

PS - I'm a satisfied customer of both UHS and of Amedex - I see them as excelent and complimentary parts of a comprehensive health care plan.

I have determined from a search that Amedex is also, or now called Bupa. My friend is already awaiting information from them. The first reply I got described this other one as universal medical services (CHAPS), while you call it universal health services. I wonder if it's the same thing, but either way, I still look forward to contact info. Thanks

Diane is right about having both coverages. We cant afford that so are feeling Lucky we have Universal, and just hope it stays available. You all who are asking for contact info, just look in the phone book for Universal Health Services... Belize City call them and ask for number or to be connected to C.H.A.P.S you can also look at Universal Health Services Belize City....web site.

Hi all,

Just googled Univeral Health Services Belize and got this from the Channel 7 News site: http://www.7newsbelize.com/index.shtml

FYI - appears to be good news:

Francis Fonseca: GOB Free from UHS Debt

Earlier this week, Belize Health Care Partners announced that it had taken over 100% of the assets of Universal Health Services. But the first thing we asked was, “what about the $45 million in publicly guaranteed debt that the hospital had racked up?” Well today we put that question to Attorney General Francis Fonseca. He’s the only Minister who the Prime Minister kept in the loop throughout – even as Cabinet was not informed of the signing of the guarantee. Today Fonseca told us that Belize Health Care Partners will take over all the debt.

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Attorney General
“We are free from all liability. The government has abolsutely no exposure as it relates to that debt. We are free from all liability and the Prime Minister has kept true to his word and his commitment that no tax payers will be spent in resolving that matter and in paying off that debt. The Belize Bank has been paid, satisfied, and that is the end, in our minds, of that matter.”

Jules Vasquez,
Have they received a guarantee of a revenue stream as would come from NHI?

Hon. Francis Fonseca,
“I am aware of no such guarantee.”

Today’s Amandala quotes Belize Health Care Principal Dr. Vinny as saying that the paperwork has not yet been finalized, and after it is settled next week, his group will have a press conference.
