My husband and I are traveling to the Corona Del Mar at the end of April. Do you recommend traveling by plane to the island or by water taxi? Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

We took Tropic Air. The ride is only 15 minutes compared to a boat ride of 1 1/2 hours - It is my understanding these are smaller boats not like the big ferries, so the comfort may not be what you are expecting as well as you would have to get a taxi from the airport to where the water taxi picks you up, therefore you have to schlep your bags out of the airport into a taxi, out of the taxi into the boat, out of the boat...I'd much rather pay the extra $$ and get to the island sooner. Just my opinion but the plane worked so well for us!

don't forget to factor in the expensive taxi ride from international air port to the water terminal.
Go by air the water taxi isn't practical.

Taxi is $25 US. Boat is about $15 per person. Hassle factor makes it usually not worth the savings if just for 2 people. But the boat can be a nice way to arrive on the island if you have the time & inclination. Last boat is 4:30PM so you would have to arrive at the airport by 2 or so at the latest. Flight is $57.75 one way pp.

This is the advice I give guests when they ask if they can take the water taxi:

Yes, you can get here by water taxi. We generally suggest that guests take the plane to get here and the water taxi on the way back. Here's why: when you arrive at Belize International (which is in Ladyville), you must go through immigration before you get your bags and then customs. If you take the water taxi, once you find your bags, you must take them outside, hail a cab and have the cab take you to the Municipal Airport in Belize City. There you get your bags, again, and take them to the pier where they are loaded onto the water taxi. The trip lasts about one hour and forty minutes. The water taxi can be very crowded. (see picture below) Once here, you have to get your bags again, and take them to another taxi. The taxi then takes you to your hotel. You can walk to your hotel, but even the best luggage doesn't roll well on sand streets. The cost of the taxi in Belize City is about $25 . The water taxi fare to the island is $30.00 per person. The taxi in San Pedro can run anywhere from $3 US to $7 US depending on where you are staying. On top of that, you have been traveling all day and you have no control over the weather. A two hour boat ride in 75 degree weather if overcast feels very wet and cold. Depending on your arrival time into Belize International, you may not make the last water taxi, which leaves at 4:30. The last plane out of International for San Pedro leaves at 5:30, and you arrive in San Pedro at 5:55.

Actually the last flight from BZE-San Pedro can be a lot later than that. I landed from Dallas a few weeks ago at after 7pm,after a much delayed flight. I assumed I'd be staying in Belize City that night but went to the Tropic Air desk anyway. I was amazed that they were putting on several extra aircraft to get people out to SP, and I know they were still flying after 8:30pm. Tropic really do go that extra mile.

No question - fly.

If you take the water Taxi on the way back, you fly home covered in salt spray.

I fly both ways. get there quick, and stay as late as i can to safely catch flight home.

If you are just dying to see what the water taxi is like, take one over and back to Caye Caulker and spend a leisurely afternoon on that island.

The last SCHEDULED flight is at 5:40...but during busy times or late arrivals, they will get you here.

I don't encourage people to take the water taxi back (ie salt spray), but usually when they have flown over, they want to fly back as well.

Not always. Cannot count on it. I have had clients stranded in Bz City for the night on more than one occasion.
