A long-haul Boeing 777 crash-landed at London Heathrow yesterday. There were no serious injuries. It touched down inside the airfield but short of the runway. The undercarriage was torn off, and there was substantial damage to wings and engines, but the fuselage remained intact. Apparently the pilot lost all electronics and power on short finals, and by all accounts did very well in bringing the aircraft at virtual stall speed over the airfield boundary. Had he not managed it there would have been a disaster.
Apparently no 777 has ever been lost, and it's not clear whether this counts as the first loss or not. Despite this incident, it remains a remarkably safe aircraft.
