Okay, I know I'm asking a question that has been asked before, but I'm still a little confused as to how much I can rely on ATM's for cash. Clearly I don't plan on getting off the plane and heading straight for one so I can buy dinner.. smile but I'm going to be there for 10 days, and I don't know how much I'll need. So what is everyone's take on being able to use ATM's in San Pedro? Mine has the Plus and Interlink logos on it....
By the way - I've been reading a lot the past few months and you guys are SOOO helpful and patient with everyone's questions!!
I CANNOT WAIT to get there!!! 16 more days.........

Travel Checks worked well for us. Many places would cash them for us with passport ID. Restaurants, Hotels, Stores, Diving Tours, etc. There is always the exchange rate involved.
Belize it!

We do some of each. Take some US$, a few traveler's checks, a credit card, and an ATM card. Belize Bank works for the ATM. Save up some $1's, they come in really handy for tips. I put aside a few each week, and have a fist full when we come. One day, hungry for lunch, no cash left, the phone lines were down. I am so glad we had a few TC's! If phones or electric are down, no credit cards or ATM's. We carry a color copy of front page of passport. That's enough ID for the TC.

US traveller's checks make a lot of sense. Nowdays, you get charged a 3% Foreign Transaction Fee on both credit cards and ATM cards & that can really add up! As well you're charged $2 by the issuing bank to use their ATM! We now take a good supply of traveller's checks.

TC's are a large pain in the . . .

Since an ATM came to the island, I've only arrived with cash and my ATM card. I'm happier for it.

All that said, I'm not particularly happy when I see the transaction charges on my bank statement . .but then I was even more unhappy when I would return with TC's and change them into cash. I had to pay to buy them and then pay more to cash them in back at home.

Yes, carrying cash and my ATM card is the way to go for me.
