Hello All,

Is anyone out there currently subscribing to BTL or Coral Cableís highest level of Residential DSL (advertised by BTL as the "Ultima" plan - 512K up / 1mb down)?

I know the quality of service can vary wildly from day to day (or even minute to minute), Iím just trying to determine (on a good day) the approximate actual vs. advertised bandwidth and what kind of latency there is. I'm also curious to know if there are significant differences in the results depending on location (in town vs. north of the bridge vs. south of town).

If you are on the island and subscribing to one of the top 2 DSL plans (256K/512K or 512K/1mb) could you please go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and then record your up/down and ping rates along with which DSL plan you have and if you are north, south or in town? I really appreciate it.

For the record, I know there was a another post a while back where folks from all over were giving their results. I just need to hear from folks that are currently on the island using DSL.

Thanks a bunch,

4 miles North of town. We pay for 128K service through Coral Cable. Noon today - 68K down / 110K up Our serice has been upside down for the last few months. We should be getting faster downloads than uploads. All of it goes through BTL at some point.

Coral Cable have had some serious software issues and I had no internet at all later last week. They supposedly upgraded their software on Saturday and assured me that performance should be both better and more stable. Yet yesterday evening I again lost it for about 5 minutes.

I'm using their 128mb service, and most of the time use a wireless router. I've just run the Speedtest ping test and have a rather strange result - 93kbps download, 320 kbps upload! I selected a server in Mexico City as being close to Belize (I'm told distance can make a big difference).

Probably the odd result is because I'm using a VPN, which incidentally appears to be located in Chicago. I'll disable it and run the test again..... This time it selected a server in the Yucatan, and delivered 133/107. Equally odd for a 128kbps service, but at least it's the right way round. And quite respectable. Now if they can resolve the inconsistency.....

I am (of course, Cindy) near to Pedro's Inn.

Just re-enabled the VPN and ran the test again. It again chose the Yucatan server. Result 88/258. I don't understand - I just confirmed that I AM on the 128kbps service.

Yep distance is a biggie with this test, and of course you have no way of knowing where the bottle-neck is, it might be your home line to the central office, or the link to the mainland, or from the country to wherever. I use the speedtest.net site all the time for work (day job is a network eng) and even here, we see much faster downloads usually from closer proximity. Why the downloads are faster than the uploads tells me that somewhere the ISP is over-subscribed, much more BW is used to download unless you are a server or some sort of exchange(music, video, etc )service provider.

Does anyone know how the island is fed for voice/internet? Are their microwave links or under-water fiber?

Ooops, I meant to question the uploads being tauted as faster than the downloads... that is usually not the case, and shouldn't be... sorry my bad, I didn't proof my response!

My BTL Service:

Advertised 512kbps down / 256kbps up

Actual to Miami, FL using Speedtest.com

415kbps down / 201kbps up

And to be sure you are getting a decent speed test result - everyone should know that ALL BTL traffic goes directly through Miami using multiple high-speed links via the Arcos submarine fiber ring. This means that if you run the test to Mexico city, you are not going by land...

You can also check your route to any destination on the internet using the *traceroute* tool from Window command prompt:

Start->Run - Type "cmd"

Then type at prompt:

<<prompt:/>> tracert <<hostname.com>>

For example:

Typing *tracert ambergriscaye.com*

Gives you:

traceroute to ambergriscaye.com (, 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

Add in an anonymizer so you can send e-mails to services that have blacklisted BTL and your upload time doubles.
