I hope all you great folks can help us. We're going to AC next week and plan on using quite a few US Traveller's Checks instead of credit cards or liberal use of the ATM, since the money-grabbing US banks are now tacking on a 3% International Transaction Fee for not only credit card use, but also ATM withdrawals. Do the local banks charge a fee to cash a Traveller's Check? Please let us know your experiences. Thanks.

You're better off cashing them in the grocery stores or at Milo's. They'll pay 2 to 1 or better where as the bank is 1.985 to 1.

We took traveler's checks, and most stores, restaurants, etc will accept them as payment (and give you change in BZ$). Your hotel may also cash them. No worries! Bank rate is a lower exchange rate, as Simon mentions.

I use Milos, never have to stand in line as you do at the bank.

FYI the banks in San Pedro have VERY different hours than USA and I have always had long lines to deal with. Luckily most places will cash your Travel checks with passport ID - grocery stores, rental places, restaurants, hotels, dive/snorkel operators, gift shops.... Why waste time at the bank if you don't have to??
and before we return to USA we just request some US change and we have gotten it. Depends on the place.
Have also cashed some t checks in the duty free shops on the way home!

Bring SMALL denominations to make it easy for little shops or resturants to give you change. Lots $20's.
