I would like to download more music to my ipod nano, but the original disc was used on my desktop, and I'm on a lap top. The disc has been packed away, so isn't available(in storage container). My problem is, I don't want to delete what is on the ipod, but want to add to it. It won't let me do it without deleting what is already on there, using ITunes. Any way I can load more on it without removing what is on there? I can't sync it because the sync part is on the desktop puter. HELP!!!

Aha, those tricky folks at Apple won't allow it. You can always download iTunes from apple.com to your laptop. The problem is where your songs are at. If you have the same songs on the laptop, no problem, they will be added to iTunes. If you don't have these songs on your laptop, you will loose everything on your Nano when you update. iPods are sucky on this feature.

I could be wrong, as the tech world is way above my island mentality!

S&S,

I have some info on how to copy all the info onto a different computer or drive. It is at home, but I can scan the documents and send you a copy tomorrow, if that helps.

See, therein lies my problem, Simon. I don't have the old ones on my laptop. I wonder if there is a way we can download from the ipod to the laptop, or a cd, and then reverse it when I download the new songs to the ipod? Anyone ever tried this? If they did, how do you get music from the ipod to the computer? I hate this hi-tech stuff....makes my head hurt!

Dita, that would be great, if you would send it to me. I need to get what is on my ipod to my computer, then to a cd, then reload everything to my ipod. Geez....life can be so hard sometimes.

Is it giving you an option to load into the library? Like loading a CD into your Itunes library? Recreating a playlist so to speak? then you can unload from the IPOD and reload again? The Geek Squad may be able to help also, but you have to pay for them.

Have you tried the support site for apple? If you go to Apple.com and click on support. They have a site to download the itunes file. I have not gone into it myself but I think it may be downloading the CD that you do not have on hand and then re registering your IPOD from there. It is worth a try.

There's a program called iPod Copy (for Mac) that is a free trial, $20 to buy. You can go to download.com and search "ipod rip" for other software that will copy from iPod to computer.

I'll wait to see what "Tune Tools" does. Otherwise this is why I will never buy an iPod, or probably any other Apple product. Most other makes don't have this problem.

have you tried a program like "go to my PC" which would allow you to access your Desktop, and then copy files to the laptop?

I got hubby a sansdisc mp3 player, and it's so much better than the ipod. It loads easier, it has a radio, everything the ipod can do, only more. It's just as small, and the wheel is easier to control, if you have larger hands. He got frustrated using the ipod at the gym.
Thanks for all your help, you all. I did down load one, got ready to pay for it with paypal, and their site is down...go figure. I guess it isn't in the cards today. I will try some of these, Barnacle...thanks for your help.

Apple is pretty tough on sharing music, thus only your computer's music can be copied onto the iPod and you can't download it off of it to another computer. I would love to learn a way around this.

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Harold the computer guy, to come over. Harold clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

He gave me a bill for a minimum service call. As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?'

He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'

I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What' s that .. in case I need to fix it again?'

Harold grinned.... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?'

'No,' I replied.

'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out '

So I wrote down . I D 1 0 T

I used to like Harold.

This is how I feel right now! It has taken me all day to do this, and I'm still not finished, but I'm getting a whole lot closer to the final efforts. Thanks to everyone for your help.

For what it is worth, I was complaining about the same problem the other night. I got a new Ipod Nano for Xmas and want to start to load it with my personal CD collection. Then I learned that I would lose everything on the Ipod when I buy my new home computer and start trying to load I-tunes (or whatever).

The 'geek at the dinner table said, you should be able to go into I-tunes program and set it at 'manual' before loading and then as long as you always set at 'manual' whereever, whenever, whichever computer you use, you should be OK. However, the trick is that you have to do it the first time out of the gate.

Of course, I offer this to you having no fricken clue what he was talking about.

sunandsand, Itunes recognizes that the computer your Ipod is connected to doesn't hold your library. When it asks if you want to sync your Ipod just click on "cancel". It will not erase what's on your Ipod. You can manage your Ipod manually.
1. In Itunes, select Ipod nano in the source list and click the Summary tab.
2. In the Options section, select "Manually manage music".
3. Click apply.
You can add music to your computer. To get it into your Ipod in the "Manually manage" mode, you have to click & drag the song to the Ipod nano icon in the source list.
Are you on AC yet?

Also just an FYI, you can register your IPOD on up to 4 different PC/laptop's. I did go to the web site and all of the instructions are there under support and it is free. It is exactly as Loansum states. Good Luck.
