I can honestly say that the food in San Pedro that I've experienced is either on par with or so much better than most places I've visited. And I'm a big guy who knows food...
I will say that service in San Pedro can be spotty. Usually it's also totally great, but I've had bad experiences at Carumba's and Jambel's. At Carumba's the waiter reminded us 10+ times during the meal that gratutity was not included and then proceeded to give us terrible service. He brought the wrong meals, brought them out one at a time and forgot a whole dish that we had ordered. Then before handing us the check, he reminded us that gratuity was not included again.
At Jambel's, the waitress charged me 300 USD for the all-you can eat buffet for 4 people. After I protested and asked to talk to the manager, he agreed that we owed the full amount. The band was loud and I was tired so I ended up paying and never went back.
But outside of those two bad apples, the rest of the establishments on the island have always exceeded expectations.
