Hello All,
There is a question I've had for a while that no one here can seem to answer.
I noticed that there is little tidal difference through out the day on the island.
Here I can see differences in 3-4 feet.
What makes the island's location different or where did the tides go?

The closer you are to the equator the less influence the mass of the moon has on the tides, as I recall from my physics classes.

That may be true but not necessarily in all cases. In NJ near the inlet 5 1/2 feet. Back bay couple of miles away tide runs just as strong for same period of time but rise and fall only 18". Saw 5 ft tides in the Bahamas and 50 ft rise and fall in Nova Scotia.New moon and full moon always make a difference but....what the hell do I know?

6 string is right but also the cycle of the moon adds and subtracts to the equation. Higher tide at large moon and the time of the year relative to proximity to the equator, but Rykat is right as well some other factors make local differences.

Springs tides and neaps tides play quite an important part in tidal ranges, as does geography. Some places have double tides - two high waters and two low waters every 24 hours - quite unusual, I happened to grow up near one such place on the south coast of England.

You'll see the highest high tides and lowest low tides just after new and full moons.

Inkblot Belize has two tide highs and lows its from the continents acting as a huge dams. One is considered a false high and low and is less than the real one They publish the tide charts in the San Pedro Sun and the local divemasters consult it to predict the current at Hol Chan.

I thought most places had two highs and two lows in a tide cycle, which is about every 25 hours. The relative scale of those varies according to positions of both sun and moon.

inkblot - where are you from?

"There are a number of reasons why tides are higher in some places than in others. It has a lot to do with the shape of the shoreline and the depth of the water. The Bay of Fundy is somewhat funnel shaped and quite shallow. This causes the moon-created water bulge (tide) to grow higher as it moves along the length of the ever-narrowing Bay because it simply has nowhere else to go."

Marty provides some great maps and illustrations on this website.

Nannahead the tide changes are much easier to sea where the beach is not raked or cleaned. Also Ambergris Caye is protected by the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, largest in the northern hemisphere. The Barrier Reef causes shallow water from the reef to the shore. The other side of the reef can drop off hundreds of feet. This can be seen by strong snorkelers and divers at Hol Chan, San Pedro Cut & other areas. There is a cross cut view on the map page above.
