Please help! My laptop has just gone kapput and I don't know if it's the adapter, the battery or the PC itself. There is no power at all. I've tried it in several different sockets, and other items work in them anyway. I didn't notice any alert before it turned off but was concentrating on the work (stupid Vista alerts are hardly noticeable anyway). Does anyone have a Gateway adapter (and maybe a battery?) I can try to see if that's the problem? It says output: DC19V 3 42A. I'd be so grateful for any help!!

I don't know about Gateway, but most laptops these days use the same DC power supply. I have three here and they all use 19V. You just need to check the polarity, though I doubt that'll be a problem. Sounds as if your power supply has failed, not an uncommon occurrence here. Is there a warning light on the transformer and is that working? A common problem is the low tension cable breaking internally where it joins the co-ax plug that plugs into the laptop, particularly if you pull the cord out by the cable rather than the plug. But also check the mains lead that goes into the transformer as that can fail, again especially if you pull it out by the cord and not the plug.

If you need a new power supply Julian at CSM2000 on Middle Street (San Pedro) should be able to help.

Thanks for your reply. No it doesn't have a light. The (much older) Toshiba we have uses a 15V supply. What's frustrating about the Gateway one is that it has a three circle thing to go into the adapter (which I haven't seen on anything else), instead of a two circle one (can you tell I know the technical terms!lol!)The whole thing is only about six months old and I rarely unplug it, when I do always from the plug. I can't see any signs of wear on it. I posted on CC because that's where I am and no plans to go to SP just yet. Is there anyone in CC with the Gateway adapter, just so I can try it? Please?

Can you post a digital photo of each end of each cable? I think I know what you mean, but I just want to be sure.

If you can't work out how to post it just email to me - [email protected]. I come to CC periodically (was there two days ago).
