This to me is important so thought I'd share incase anyone missed it...

Northwest to charge for second bag; American may follow

Northwest (NW) will join United (UA), US Airways (US) and Delta (DL) and begin charging $25 to check a second bag to bolster revenue amid high fuel prices, Reuters news service reported Friday.

Members of NW’s loyalty programs may still check two bags at no additional charge, and customers booked in first class can continue to check up to three bags at no charge, the story said. The new fees apply to NW flights within North America beginning May 5.

American (AA) announced Thursday that it may also charge for a second bag. The carrier filed a notice with the Canadian government, which requires a 45-day notice to review such a change.

But joining AA's loyalty program costs nothing.

I've been a member of NW FF program since day one. But, I believe I read somewhere that you have to maintain Elite status for the baggage. I am always just a few miles shy every year.

U S Airways is also going to follow...No airline wants to raise prices. but with fuel cost going thru the roof, they need to. So instead of an 100% increase in price, you will pay for what you use...

"But WHY's the rum gone?

The cost of fuel is not going up. The value of the u.s. dollar is dropping.

wade, exactly!

Danny, are ya joking? Annualized fuel costs rise by about $44 million for each $1 per-barrel increase in the price of crude oil. This time last year oil was at $66 a barrel, today price is at $100.

Continental has not resorted to this - doesn't mean that they won't.

I read yesterday in a monthly publication, "Industry faces worst crisis since 9/11".

It's the bad combo - fuel going up, dollar going down. Some places in NY are starting to accept Euros since they are worth so much more than dollars!
