Has anyone stayed at either of these places? Are they safe, clean, bug free? Is the beach decent in front of them?

We have always dived with Patojo's at the Tides and they are very nice people. I know that they have expanded. Though I have never stayed there I would not hesitate to.

Since there is a beach road in front of both Casa Caracol and the Tides, there is virtually no beach in front of either. The snorkeling and swimming off Patojo's pier are fairly good.

Have a look here

to see the location of both places. Zoom out to see the relationship to town, the cut, etc.

Either place would be a good choice, although we liked Casa Caracol's living room/kitchen area to hang out together. We stayed in July 06. There is a beach "road," but the beach area is lovely. Unfortunately, I didn't charge my camera batteries, so I only got one picture of the beach area during a storm. I think the picture below it is of Patojo's dock.

Phil is a gracious host (once you get past the British humor? wink ), and he checks in on guests periodically, so that sounds like a good service for your group. And, unless it has changed, Casa Caracol guests get to swim at the Tides.

Sorry Phil. I love the Boca del Rio area and think Casa Caracol is in a great location.

Here is a picture taken on the beach a few steps north of Casa Caracol. I'll leave it up to the original poster to decide if it's 'decent'.

Ummm, that's no where near Casa Caracol, it's right in front of my place.

You're right of course Simon. It's about half a kilometer south of the area in question. I either need to drink more or give it up all together.

I will stand by the picture as a fair representation of what the road and beach area is like in front of Casa Caracol though.
