1982 Derby winner Gato Del Sol was a 21-1 shot who failed miserably as a stud:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKnEXVhxiyY We bought one of his offspring as a 6 year old to save him going to the "canners": "Big George" has sold for $50,000 at Keenland as a weanling, $25,000 as a 2 year old, then $10,000, $5000 and to us for $1200, after only 2 wins in 12 starts
A year of cooling him down (6-8 gallons of oats a day for a horse at the track) and feeding him at the top of the hill with his water at the bottom, and I had the smoothest riding horse I've ever owned. I rode him for 4 years.
For anyone with the time and patience to rescue a thoroughbred, it can be the most wonderful experience..
As for the race? Is Otter putting up a saucer?
