#279225 - 05/03/08 11:55 PM What to pack?
boreas Offline
All to go into one good sized back-pack
So far it is:
(in order of importance)
1. Passport
2. Some U.S. cash and rest to rely on CC card or Debit
3. 4 changes of clothes - 1 pant, shorts/t-shirts / long sleeve shirt / floppy hat (or cap coz I don't think I have one)
4. Sun screen
5. Some kind of insect repellent (recommendations should I buy this there?)
6. Swim suit
7. Towel
8. Rope for hanging wet clothes
9. Snorkel
10. Goggles
11. Thin sheets (blanket maybe)
12. Mag light
13. Wash cloth
14. Zip lock bags and maybe a small tupperware
15. Digital camera
16. Laptop (maybe)
17. Spare glasses
18. Toothbrush etc...

My big nightmare is getting turned back at the airport for not having some kind of shots (vaccines) or malaria pills or something, so please let me know of anything I am missing.

Thanks!!!

boreas,
Don't worry about shots/pills - no requirements for air travel. Do you have room for your fins? Where are you staying? There is probably no need for blanket/sleeping bag. I would buy insect spray where you live (the kind with high % of Deet & read the warnings) then store it in a small ziplock baggie. Don't forget a hat/cap, sandals & small flashlight. Toothbrush & paste (Well, it wasn't on your list!) Did you decide on CC or AC? Wherever you go, have a blast!
Please write a trip report for us when you return.
Pam

Thanks for putting me right on the shots. I don't know if I will have room for fins or not.

I am staying at Pedros, but might do some backpacking off of AC and so wanted to be prepared.

Cap and hat is a really good idea, and I will probably wear sandals on the way down.

Why the small flashlight btw? I hadn't thought of that one...

Also, I am down there for a month, so I am going to stay on AC for a week then head down to Caulker and take it from there. Why not? I guess...

Are you checking the backpack or carrying it on?

If carrying on, you won't be allowed the sunscreen, insect repellent or toothpaste unless the containers are 3 oz. or less.

Nah, I will check it in. Probably throw it in a plastic bag.

I will carry a smaller "day pack" on the plane with me. It can have electronics, books (if any) and maybe some snacks...

The flashlight is great for walking the beach at night. It gets dark early, and a lot of the area does not have lights. Also comes in handy when the power goes off. We take a mini-maglite. Fits in a pocket.

I suggest bringing fewer changes of clothes and several swim suits. You will live in shorts and tank tops. I think regular T-shirts are too hot here. But why not just pack two and buy a few while you ae here. You can rinse out your clothes and they will dry overnight.
Instead of a blanet I suggest a couple of light weight twin sized sheets.
I find it so warm here that I sleep on top of the sheet but you may get stuck in an air conditioned room then you might want a sheet over you.
What about a wash cloth?
Using credit cards gets expensive - why not travelers checks?

All good tips. I was going to pack pants, but now I will go for more shorts. I don't own any tank tops, so I will play that by ear.

Wash cloth is going in also.

Also, you might wanna take a few gallon size ziploc bags . . come in handy for wet clothes, leftover food, etc.

On the list, thanks! I think I might also take a tupperware box and maybe have a small kitchen knife in it or something...

Skip the long pants, definitely pack ziplocs. I'd say skip the sheet unless you plan on sleeping outdoors on your own. Bring a small bottle of woolite for hand washing clothes and a length of rope and clothespins for hanging your laundry.

One of my good old buddies went to Hawaii every year with his good old mother. When Mom got too old to travel he asked me to fill in. Geo. is a big guy but he took everything he needed for a week in a canvas hand bag.
Once you have everything packed - take out half of it!

Boreas - I would throw a pair of Tevas or crocks in the bag in case of a rainy day as walking in wet flip flops can be tricky. Throw in a long sleeve shirt for sun protection and a good floppy hat as well.
Jessie - some of the beach dogs have fleas so I am partial to empty Belikin bottles. laugh
