they denied his visa. I wonder if I go with him to reapply it would make a difference?

I don't think so but if you do try again, next time, set yourself up as his representative. That way you can deal with the govt. for him (other than he will still likely have to go to Guatemala). If nothing else, you'll learn first hand why he was denied.
