#282664 - 06/03/08 11:16 PM Plastic Water Bottles - Fed Up
Caye Connect Offline
It bothers me so much every time I ask for a glass of ice water in this town and I am told that my only option is a bottle of Crystal, usually just a small one. Many times I ask for iced water and a bottle is just brought to me w/out even a warning. This comes down to greed at the expense of the environment. The problem is the waste created by a plastic water bottle versus filling that same water into a reusable glass from a reusable container. It is pure greed and I am fed up with it.

I would like a list complied of every bar and restaurant that will give you a glass of ice water from a 5-gallon upon request.

Mickey's is the ONLY restaurant I have found in town that just simply pours a glass of ice water w/out even asking you.

Let's start the list - if you are a restaurant owner, please do let me know because I will patronize your place over others. Also may be wise to include the restaurants that refuse to give you ice water (like they don't have a 5 gallon to fill from ) --

ICE WATER:

Mickey's (on the table)
Wild Mangos (upon request)
Blue Lotus (upon request)
Christos (upon request)
Island Perk - Britta filtered smile
Blue Moon (upon request)
Hidden Treasure (upon request)
Lime (upon request)
Sunset Grill (upon request)
El Divino (upon request)
George's Kitchen (upon request)
Portofino (on the table)

Great Idea knyc

Blue moon - Hidden Treasures and Lime have all given me water in glasses the first 2 was without asking for it at our meal Lime was at a crawl party and I was not drinking so they gave me some water in a cup with ice upon request.

Perk will also give you filtered water in a cup as well if you ask.

Thanks for noticing Island Perk's commitment to cold responsible water. A cold glass of water is always avaliable to anyone willing to ask with a please and a thank you. Kids included. They often pass on their way from school during the hot weather for a cold glass of water.
I too get mad when I ask for a "glass of water" and am served a bottle when I see a 5 gallon jug available. There are a few business I will not return to because of this and we let me know at the time they lost our business because of this practice.
Don't get me started on "to go cups" or take out containers...

Add Sunset Grill to your list. I always get a tall glass of ice water there and as many refills as I need.

Tacogirl, to be on the safe side, be sure that any reusable plastic water bottles, such as Nalgene, are marked with recycling #4 and not #7. #7 plastic contains bisphenol A, a chemical which has recently come under scrutiny for it's negative health effects.

Canada has banned baby bottles and toys made from #7 plastic.

Do any bottles designed for single use contain the bad chemical?

Look at the number inside the recycling symbol. If it's a 7 then it contains BPA.

I see that article also advises "reduce use of canned foods" but I couldn't find a reason quoted. Does this chemical BPA also affect cans? If so, all cans or just aluminum or tin-plated steel?

Have you seen the plastic lined cans in Belize? We have them here in Canada and they are the ones in question. In regular cans you only have to worry about lead leaching out of the solder smile

Hadn't noticed them, till now.

As you say, with traditional tin-plated steel cans the main concern is lead. But of course aluminum is increasingly associated with Alzheimers, so maybe the new cans aren't actually an improvement.

Unfortunately it is still unclear whether excess aluminum in the brain is a cause of Alzheimers or an effect of contracting the disease. ...but I still gave up all of my aluminum cookware and utensils many, many years ago.

Many deoderants contain Aluminum also which is directly absorbed into your body. This may explain why I am getting so forgetful lately! wink
Seems nothing is safe anymore.

Usually only anti-perspirants contain aluminum so if you have concerns about this, use a simple deodorant instead. ...and bathe and change your clothes often since fresh sweat doesn't stink anyway smile

Good to know Hon

I thought the brand Nalgene was specifically known to be safe anyone I knew who used that brand in Canada was super health conscious and would not use bad plastics. I will check on that further though to make sure.

Salt crystal is a great alternative to deodorant available at health food stores and lasts years.

After a friend in Canada got lumps under her arms and doctor said she had to stop using deodorant as it was the cause I decided to make the switch and so far no one has told me I stink ha ha.

From the article referenced in my first post about BPA...

Quote:
And water bottle manufacturer Nalgene announced April 18 (2008)it would phase out use of BPA in its containers in response to public concern about the chemical.

This would indicate that some, if not all, older Nalgene bottles were made with BPA plastic. I just had a quick peek at their website and under the product lines I looked at, there was a very prominent "BPA Free" designation.

It would be difficult to know if an ebay sale was a new bottle or a sell off of the old ones.

...and how would it be even possible for someone as sweet as you to stink smile
