#285232 - 06/17/08 04:30 PM Download Firefox 3 today for Guinness World Record
Short Offline
Just a little reminder: Firefox 3 is out now (I downloaded it and it works great). They want to set a Guinness World record for most downloads in 24 hours, so here is the link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ - Don't wait till tomorrow!

NEW YORK (AP) — The new version of the Firefox Web browser became available as a free download Tuesday.

The release was delayed nearly two hours as visitors checking for the update overloaded Firefox's Web servers, which were slow or unreachable at times.

Firefox supporters organized launch parties around the world as they tried to set a world record for most software downloads in a 24-hour period.

The category is new, and Guinness World Records must certify it, a process that could take a week or longer.

Firefox comes from Mozilla, an open-source community in which thousands of people, mostly volunteers, collectively develop free products. Firefox is the No. 2 Web browser behind Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer.

Firefox 3 includes enhancements to help users organize their frequently visited Web sites and block access to sites known to distribute viruses and other malicious software.

Users of Yahoo Inc.'s mail service can also use Firefox 3 to send e-mail by clicking a "mailto" link they might come across clicking on a name or a "contact us" link on a Web page. Previously such links could only open a standalone, desktop e-mail program.

Firefox 3 also offers other design and speed improvements.

I don't like the way the new one looks, but I suppose I'll get used to it. Some of the fonts are significantly smaller.

The only gripe I have is it screwed up my address bar pulldown menu which was how I accessed my "favorite" websites. I'll make it though. I Love FireFox.

Well, they had over 8 million downloads in 24 hours despite the servers being down for the first two hours. The people of Guinness are checking it as we speak. An impressive result, although the guys from Adobe claim that 8 million installs is just an average day for Flash Player - Mozilla had 1.6 million downloads the first day for Firefox 2:

Please be patient while the good people of Guinness review our World Record attempt. This might take a few days so please check back here. And, a huge thanks for all of your support!

As for the new lay out; that is mostly cosmetic, functionality is the same, but more important, it feels much faster!

Yeah I had everything bookmarked but I found that Firefox3 is very intuitive. Just type in a few keystrokes in the address bar and there were all of my old favorites.

I'll have to adjust my habits a bit but no problem. The new version looks and works great.

Pros and Cons:
spell check works within the post, meaning I no longer have to compose a post in word, spell check then cut and paste, so a very nice feature for the typing and spelling impaired

Does not seem too good at remembering passwords, so I have to log on each time, and also the "back" button seems prone to take me off the internet altogether, and back to my desktop

Can anyone explain to me the big deal about Firefox? I've used it and see no advantage over IE other than taking up more space on my hard drive.

You have to try it to see and feel the difference. My reasons are: Safer, faster, easier to handle, more reliable and open source software, thus not dependent of the big bad Microsoft Corporation.

Here are some articles that I Googled for you:

http://www.itvoir.com/portal/boxx/knowledgebase.asp?iid=717&Cat=3
"The advent of Firefox freed the users from the chaotic experience of surfing many sites at a time. It introduced the consumers with a neat experience of TABS, opening many sites at a time and viewing them simultaneously."
"The shift is from the ease of experience to security factor."
"The other pleasing factor that enhances the browsing experience is the pop up blocker. It blocks the pop up but gives an option to look them if one really wishes to."

http://www.techsupportalert.com/firefox.htm
Three Good Reasons to Abandon Internet Explorer:
1. It's an ongoing security risk:
Even the most one-eyed Microsoft supporter would have to accept that IE has been plagued with security problems.
2. If you are not using Windows XP, Microsoft has abandoned you:
Internet Explorer 7 is only available to those using Windows XP SP2 or later.
3. Internet Explorer is less configurable than Firefox:
Although IE7 now offers a useful collection of add-ons that allow you to customize your browsing experience the number of such add-ons just can't compare to the 1000+ free extensions available for Firefox.
Three Good Reasons to Stay with Internet Explorer:
1. Some web sites won't work properly with Firefox:
A number of web sites utilize non-standard, proprietary Microsoft features such as ActiveX in order to provide site navigation and other features. It's probably not a good web design practice but that doesn't stop people doing it.
2. Firefox loads slower than Internet Explorer and takes more memory:
IE's better performance here is to some degree an illusion. That's because some of the major components of Internet Explorer are always running on your PC, they are pre-loaded when Windows starts. That means IE has less work to do when it starts so it loads quicker. It also means that IE actually takes up more memory than it appears to.
3. Firefox has had its own security problems:
This may be so but Mozilla have to be commended how quickly they have released patches for newly discovered flaws, often only a day or two after the flaw was first demonstrated. This is in sharp contrast to Microsoft's tardy response to fixing IE problems.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/200...-and-opera.html
Firefox 3 goes on a diet, eats less memory than IE and Opera

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2007/01/internet_explorer_unsafe_for_2.html
Internet Explorer Unsafe for 284 Days in 2006
For a total 284 days in 2006 (or more than nine months out of the year), exploit code for known, unpatched critical flaws in pre-IE7 versions of the browser was publicly available on the Internet. Likewise, there were at least 98 days last year in which no software fixes from Microsoft were available to fix IE flaws that criminals were actively using to steal personal and financial data from users.
In contrast, Internet Explorer's closest competitor in terms of market share -- Mozilla's Firefox browser -- experienced a single period lasting just nine days last year in which exploit code for a serious security hole was posted online before Mozilla shipped a patch to remedy the problem.

I did my best accurately answering your question Simon; I hope this helps.

The key reason is safety. IE is wide open to hackers by design, and if it's installed (even if not used) provides a route into your machine. Firefox doesn't.

There are some things that can only be done with IE, and for these I install IE, run the desired program, then uninstall IE.

Only one negative observation. I believe there's something wrong with Bookmarks in v3, as I haven't found a way to save a new bookmark into my chosen location. If I save it to its default location I can then move it so it's not a show-stopper, but it's less convenient than it used to be.

i tried it just to see, twice, and had no problem. maybe i misunderstood what you are trying to do?

i've been using firefox for a few years and like it a lot. hardly use IE - except some sites have 'clickables' that do not work in firefox. that's the only time i use ie.

Tried it, not liking it so far. Keeps telling me it needs plugins to view some sites. When you install the plugin through the browers prompts it still asks for the same plugin (in this case Adobe Flash.)

I also have IE set up (easily) to open multiple sites in multiple tabs when I start it up (or click on home). Firefox doesn't seem to have any such option.

Too much crap in the address bar when you click down to review recent sites, all I want to see is a URL not a load of text.

under 'tools>>options', there is an option to load the same tabs at start up as were there in your last session. does that help?

agree about the navigation pane - but will get used to it. not that big a deal. we can't be afraid of CHANGE ha ha.

OK SJ, just realised my mistake. The overall bookmarks folder opens up contracted, not expanded as it used to do. All is now fine.

I downloaded FileZilla, a FTP thing and its so cool. You get a little browser, I guess thats what it would be called. You can send big birdie files or anything in your computer to sites anywhere.
Files to big to email, into a site for others to go and get.
If your as computer illiterate as me it all is cool.
