I don't know how similar it may be in the USA, but you may be interested in this recent report on tipping in England. Amongst other things, it is clear that when a tip is included on a credit card, there is no legal obligation to pass it on to the staff and often that doesn't happen. Interesting reading, which bears out what I've always thought.

But the English don't tip, so what's the worry anyway?

JUST KIDDING my English friends!

That's fundamentally wrong, Chris. Many English don't tip AUTOMATICALLY as they feel it totally negates the point of a tip. A mandatory or automatic tip should just be rolled into the cost of the meal. Many English tip generously when they feel it's deserved.

Tipping is a pleasure...unless its undeserved. Polite, expeditous service is reason enough for a standard tip. Particularly friendly, helpful service deserves a little something extra. Good-will will follow.

Fundamentally speaking.......it was stated in jest. I always tip 10% here in Belize realizing how small a salary the servers make, even for mediocre service. Just my thing, I can afford it and they sure do need it. A lot of times they are just new and haven't had proper training. 20% goes to those who make a difference when I enjoy a meal OR drinks. Just my personal belief in tipping, not that I believe others should follow this school of thought. Tipping is fun-da-mental!

I rarely tip when there is a gratuity included on the check. In fact, I will often ask for that gratuity to be removed from the check out of principle. And I will then inform the management and waitstaff the amount that I would have tipped if they had not done so.

However, my standard tip for solid service is about 20% and up to 50% or 60% for excellent service.

I'm not affraid to tip, I just don't like people telling me I have to.

There are several things that should be considered when leaving a tip. Let's not forget the hour(s) some of us sit to chat with friends. The server looses money on you when you just sit w/out ordering. They should be highly compensated for that.

DeadS - you must work(ed) in the food/bar industry, I do the same here as well. You have to take care of those who take care of you is my motto.

The thing that irritates me is the tip jar on the counter for counter service establishments like a deli. I know for a fact that those kids make more than the traditional server wage (half the minimum wage here) and to put that jar tells me nothing. I always thought tips stood for To Insure Prompt Service.

But why eat my vegetables I already know that I am short!

I hear ya. But, as a former waitress, it's a gamble and it's better to be safe with a guaranteed tip than to roll the dice (that is assuming excellent service has been given).
