#289537 - 07/20/08 03:46 PM Response to Amanda Syme's Question Re Property Tax

Amanda Syme posted a question about property taxes to this forum and then the post was blocked for public responses to the same forum in response to the question posed. I don't know the reason for that but I think if you ask a question to the public then let the public answer transparently about how they feel so the answers can be publicly debated. I am tired of "secrecy" issues concerning public issues.

That said, I believe Amanda's question is slyly posed. First of all, raising property taxes is not the only way to raise funds for the projects mentioned in her post. There are numerous other ways to raise funds for municipal projects that are less cumbersome on poor people.

In fact, I would be unequivocally opposed to the raising of property taxes specifically because property taxes create undue hardship for the people who can least afford it -- the poor.

I would suggest, instead, the recommendation that a per unit Impact Fee be charged to any developer over a certain size intending to build on the island. Impact Fees would revert to the City Council to upgrade utilities, road works, etc. to meet the increasing demands caused by the needs of these large-scale developments.

Thanks and cheers,

impact fees are a great way to raise capital for infrastructure. no doubt.

i do think you are going to need a way to raise money for long term issues like police force, garbage collection and disposal etc.

At no time was there an attempt to be sly. I have found that most folks prefer that their conversations regarding the property that they own and the taxes that they pay be somewhat confidential. Likewise their comments on a public forum can be misquoted and misconstrued. Therefore asking people to write to an email address with complete information provided and truthful opinions and comments with the assurances of anonimity tend to net better results. On the open forum one person could assume many persona and falsely slant the findings because there would be no way to verify their honesty.

We all have different ways of approaching and resolving problems. I posed my questions on this board in order to find out how others feel about the subject and what their proposed solutions would entail.

The secrecy issues involve people's private and confidential information and allow them to express themselves truthfully without the fear of being publically attacked on this board.

I am surprised that my question conjures up a shadow of non-transparency and slyness - but hey, I am constantly accused of being a Polly Anna wearing Rose coloured glasses.

I must say it is quite a bright sunny productive and happy way to live though.

By the way there is an open thread regarding this subject and I will be moving this thread there.
