Every so often we get tourist with spear guns that shoot fish on the reef. allowed , no just not enforced.
I would like to see the local tour guides enforce it by saying no to the type of tourist that want to do it.
to many tourist and no enough fish to have that going on.
local guys spear fish and I look at it as their right. They eat it and are semi respectful of the reef. Tourist shoot to shoot and usually just the slower dumber fish that aren't sport fish.
Don't see many tourist with spears but when it happens its usually just a sad slaughter of reef fish and damage to coral.
I think tour guides could get away with taking the spears away from the tourist and just keeping the spear as a reward for disarming them.tourist complaining to the police would be turning themselves in.

What is the law, elbert? I thought spearing while free diving was legal - just not allowed with tanks.

Would fishing guides allowing people to take 50/60/70 fish off the reef fall into you definition of " Semi Respectful"

Local Guys allowing others to take fish off the reef with spears should be ashamed but it happens.
You can't find a law on the books that says you can't do it.
But some wise old wit once said In the absence of government we must govern ourselves.
The Hol Chan office discourages it. everyone agrees its a negative practice but 'no', not against any law. The catch is Fishing with out a license and thats where they will get butt in crack with police and fisheries if it becomes an issue like, 'the big bad tour guide took my spear away from me and won't give it back.' tough

Not everyone agrees it is a negative practice.

I will argue that it is one of the most efficient ways and least harmfull to the fish population to harvest that resource.

I will stipulate that it is when done by someone proficient.

Spearing the exact fish that one wants is much preferable to hooking several of which some are discarded as not as eatable or neting many to harvest a few.

What is your reasoning behind the thinking that hooking jacks by the dozen is OK, but spearing 3-4 for dinner is wrong? And what about Hogfish?

I would also point out that while as a "spoiled gringo" who has grown used to an Americanized diet I may only choose to eat the fillets, my island friends will eat almost the entire fish and their dogs will eat whatever they don't, so that there is no waste whatsoever.

How is this worse than line and hook fishing?
