My husband and I are thinking of moving to AC- we have two dogs- a golden and a spaniel. Was wondering what the deal was with dogs on the island- is there any vet care? Do alot of people have dogs as pets there? Is there any critters that can be particularily harmful to dogs that we should be aware of? Would you consider AC a dog friendly island? Sorry for all the questions, but they are most important to us.

A great place for dogs , and we have a wonderful vet. I've had lots of dogs here for 22 years and it gets better and better.
Mine even gets to have his own Blog and the newspaper lets him publish.

Our dog has never been happier. She loves it and we have picked up two more since we've lived here. Be very aware of the symptoms of tick fever (erlichiosis). Many expats I know who have brought their dogs from abroad have experienced this with their dogs. Ours caught it soon after getting here. Some info is here http://www.familyvet.com/ehrlic.htm

At the moment there is a full time veterinary surgeon on the island, although the surgery is very basic as it is run by the local animal welfare group, SAGA, who don't run it commercially. http://ambergriscaye.com/sagasociety/ . There are better equipped facilities on the mainland if necessary.

Many households have one or more dogs here. Your concept of pet keeping may be different to many who live here though.

It is very dog friendly here. Dogs visit many restaurants and supermarkets with their owners.

There aren't too many dangerous critters on the island in terms of dogs except for crocodiles and mosquitoes, which of course carry heartworm - so make sure you get yours on heartworm preventative treatment before you come.

We are not liberal parents to our dogs as Elbert is to Bubba and we don't allow them to blog as they would probably air our dirty laundry in public. But we do write about them on our own blog http://exploringbelizecontinues.blogspot.com/2008/07/blog-gone-to-dogs.html

My dog has a rough life here as well - he blogs about it when he gets a chance

I also brought my 2 kitties from the US. The toughest part for us was the pet transport with the airlines. No one seems to interpret the rules the same way. American "lost" Snoopy (long story). Delta was much better with my cats, but it was a direct flight. They are all very happy here - me too smile

I pulled up at a resort beach bar with my two dogs last week and order a cheese burger. The hotel manager ran out and chased the dogs down to the beach. He came back and said 'Do you want me to loose my licenses?" I was kinda shocked and thought to myself, He must be new to Belize.

Barnacle, Raggirl wants my dog to stay home when we move down. I've been weighing who will be left behind and I hope she doesn't mind retirement in the cold. After all I've had dogs all my life and I didn't get married till I was 40. It is not like she didn't understand what the deal was.

collyk, Does Frontline or a similar drug prevent tick fever? We have to be very careful of Lyme disease here and Frontline is a good defense. Thanks for the info.

One other question if you please. Is there some where on the Island that you can board your pet at if you are away for a week or so?

Why in the world would anyone want to leave their dogs/cats behind? Ragman, (even thought I don't plan on moving to AC) I have a mare I've had since she was 3 days old and have hauled her all over the states. When a guy basically told me it was them or the horse well, I STILL have her, and she turned 24 this year. Needless to say, I've had my horse/dogs longer than any guy has cared to hang around.
(and sometimes they (the animals) were the better deal)..

i have used frontline on my dog since he was but a mere scrounge.
it is very rare i find a tick on him.
i don't think frontline prevents tick fever, as much as repels ticks that can carry disease.
