It is great to hear that some progress is being made with the litter. We were in San Pedro 4 years running and although we vacationed elseware last year we will probably come back again for the month of March in '09. We walk the beach every morning to have breakfast at Estells and then down to Ramon's to go diving and the the crap on the beach is disgusting. What a difference it would make if everyone picked up the empty Coke bottle or Beliken cap. Even better if peer presure and pride prevented the litter in the first place. Changing the culture so that everyone takes pride in the natural beauty and cleanliness would take time but maybe it could start by having the school children pick up the walkways and alleys around the school. Your Island is truly beautiful but it is hard to use the word "pristine" in the discription.

Jane and I love Belize but we also wonder why the litter problem is so pervasive. I'm afraid I can't buy into the above comment that 80-90% of beach garbage comes from other countries. The side streets and the general areas north and south of town are littered pretty badly, so it goes to reason that the same people are littering the beaches.

Capitalists that we are, we've spent a fair amount of time pondering how we can help clean up SP and not have the gov't spend a fortune doing it. Yes, it starts with the children, much like the US did with the crying indian that I remember so well as a child growing up.

Since we're friends here, the litter and garbage problem is probably one of the biggest negatives we face, we're open to suggestions. But lets please take responsibility and not look east across the water and seek to blame others.

Look North , the Mexicans dump in the ocean and it washes down here to our beaches,...
but having said that a lot of it is easy to identify as local.
a good beach clean up can report it analytics to an agency collecting data. The data can be very useful in the right hands.

I walk up and down the beach almost every day (north) and in the last six months there has been minimal trash that has washed up. The trash that I have been seeing is Belizean trash - water bags, water bottles and food containers.

Don't forget the cruise ships who dump off shore.

Regardless of where it comes from, we are at the western end of the flow and we get it. I hate the cruse lines and all the dumpers, but feel we have a better chance of cleaning the beaches than changing the habits of the host of causes.
Simply put - in the short run, the most effective use of our time is just picking up the trash.
Those of you who have some concrete ideas and plans to attak the disgusting practices and dumping habits of cities in Honduras, Mexico, Carnical Cruise -- I say go for it you have my 1,000% support!!

I rode my bike this morning along a beach track - along the water's edge was more debris - not bad, but some. This time mostly very old stuff (barnacles on it).
Not the same could be said for the path itself wher 75% of the new debris was made of up fresh Crystal water bottles - and quite a lot of them.
