I have been paying closer attention to the photos I have viewed and have not noticed any public trash cans near the beaches. I realize the resorts are not going to post a pic with an eyesore trash can in it. I am referring to the random photo's. One of the best ways to get trash picked up is to offer a place to drop it other than on the ground. Not many people are going to take a 3 mile stroll and carry a large bag of trash. We have been lucky enough to visit many beaches in the world and it is safe to say the ones with public trash cans/barrels tend to be cleaner. I may be off base here, but seems it doesn't matter the source of the trash it's the final destination, the ground or a trash can. True beach lovers will pick up trash if there is a can within sight to toss it in. Will the resorts let you walk up and drop it in their cans around the bars or pools? What about the beach front restaurants, bars and dive shops? IMHO once you get a program started people will follow suit. In Texas, we added dumpsters and heavy plastic barrels bolted to posts on the popular beaches. People will use them or at least get the trash close so it gets hauled off. Not a perfect system, but it has made a difference in most places. Be part of the solution. As the popularity of AC grows, unfortunately so will the problem. Like I stated before, I'll pick it up if I see, but will I have to carry it back to my condo?

2aggies...your idea is already in progress. http://ambergriscaye.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/277401/Trash_Bin_Project.html#Post277401

Also...see photo of bin in photo section of this forum. The bins are so nice looking you might not have recognized them as trash bins in the pix you saw!

Chivas had made good points about teaching the kids about civic pride and duty too.

My kids go to the Island Academy. They are all required to keep the school property including the yard free of litter and debris. They all have a hand in cleaning and tidying. Styrofoam is banned and they are all encouraged to recycle.

I just came home Sat. after beginning in the States for 2 months. Driving home I couldn't help but notice that the roads were so much cleaner and effort had really been made to clean things up. Keep up the good work, whoever is responsible!!

I placed very pretty bamboo surrounded garbage containers made by Dr Lala and crew along with the AC Chamber of Commerce on my road and on the beach. There is no garbage collection up as far as my place so I have to empty and replace the liners myself, then I have to carry the bags of garbage to my house, then take them by golf cart to the trolley at the bridge. I'm not young and it's not easy to carry the bags and to throw the heavy bags up and into the trolley!
At least the one on the road I am able to drive up to.
Even with the garbage receptacle right there, I found sausage cans, plastic bags , paper towels and a hot sauce bottle on the beach not 10 feet from it today.
Bottom line, do what you can, it's not easy for any of us.

Ruth - thanks - I missed that. I hope the program continues to receive support and I am laying down a challenge to every "temporary resident" i.e. tourist.. Pick up a few pieces of trash each day you are in AC. Remember, you may be back sooner than you think and if the group ahead of you did, it will be a more pleasant vacation. I'll check w/ Dr. Lala while I am there to see if I can help. I just can't sit still. My wife will appreciate the time to nap by the pool. We are both part Native American, so you can imagine how we feel about Mother Earth.
