O.K., since no one is putting out any other top named candidates, I will add, as an outside choice for McCain, Tim Pawlenty. Very financially and socially conservative. Pawlenty has been "an up and commer" in the GOP since he hit the scene. He is the Governor of Minnesota which is seen as a swing state. He is a steady, well spoken republican that has rec'd a good bit of press and campaigned for McCain hard.
The down side of this candidate in my view: as governor, he likes to tie the hands of the local government and allow the state to dictate. Not exactly my thought of "democratic republic". I personally do not like what has happened to the state of MN since Pawlenty took office. Currently putting a cap on the local property tax (by the way, I don't like seeing the taxes raised but this only stops the amount levied by the local entities not state) which has caused huge cuts in local services especially in what is considered out-state MN.
